Rattly 2.4 Engine when cold and Limp Mode (Sometimes)
Hi,

As the weather gets colder my 2.4 has started playing tricks again. Just after pulling away the engine sometimes sounds very rattly (I guess the injectors) when changing up the gears. Usually this solves itself within a few seconds and all is well but occasionally the engine goes into limp mode, warning light on. The engine re starts okay and 3 cycles later the fault code goes out.

My warranty expires soon so I am trying to get this sorted, the vehicle has been back in the main dealers who have cleaned the MAF but the problem has happened again today. I've done a good search through the forum to see what might be the cause, I'm going to check all the turbo hoses tomorrow as this was suggested on one post but does any-one have any other ideas ?

I've got a cheap ebay fault code reader so I can check the codes but I'm not sure if once read they disappear from the ECU ?

(Still love the Puma to bits though - my brother's brand new Mercedes M class has just blown its turbo in Austria, I don't think Defenders are any more problematic than any other car)

Cheers

Richard

The fault code reader won't remove codes unless you specifically do so. Thumbs Up ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Your symptoms were a common fault on pre early build 2010 Pumas that have not had the EMS calibration files updated by the dealer. IIRC the fix was included on software calibration files from FDD (7H12-12K532-FDD) on??. Get the dealers to update the EMS software to the latest version and carrying out a pilot correction learn for the new calibration files.

If the above doesn't help or cure the issue then we can move onto other causes as we have the software update as the start point.

HTH.

Spot on,many thanks Very Happy - the Puma is going to back the dealers in the new year so I'll point them in the direction of the service bulletin. I'll update the post when this is done.

Got the car back this week.Main dealer checked ECU software and it was was up to date and so have changed common rail and brake pedal switch. Apparently the valve on the common rail was faulty but they have to replace the whole rail. I guess the faulty valve would cause the same problems as the out of date software ?

(Lorry man many thanks for the help, the symptoms in the bulletin described exactly what was happening better than I could)

Having got a nice shiny new common rail how do I stop it looking like the rusty old one - ACF 50 ?

ACF does the trick. Sprayed mine 3 yrs ago when it was brown with rust. Turned black and has remained so since. Haven't had to respray yet. Thumbs Up LANDYWATCH

The valve on the common rail (the Pressure Relief Valve or PRV) can be replaced on its own, it's the fuel rail pressure sensor at the other end which can't. At least you'll now have new ones of both.

Blackwolf - yes sorry it was the pressure sensor not the valve (electrical engineer working on industrial control systems so should have paid more attention Embarassed )
