Rust dilemma !
Dear all.
I have a 60 plate defender and I need a bit of friendly advice! Under the windscreen rubber on the drivers side there is a small vertical split, which I believe is where water drains from if it should get behind the windscreen seal. The vertical split is obviously welded. The defender has been back to the body shop more times than I can remember because of corrosion in this small area.It was last seen to 10 weeks ago and to my dismay, it has returned again. Do I get it sorted out again or just accept this is what they do? It's now becoming a real pain in the backside.

Tell them you've had enough and you want a new windscreen surround, then it can be fresh metal painted off the car so it should be a better job.

Believe it or not it's had a brand new surround about three repair times ago.

It's a stupid weak point in the surround (there are several joins) and, in my case, the replacement has the same problem. Major source of leaks and corrosion. Only improvement is that the dealer seems to have filled/welded the joins at the top of my new surround to make them smoother. Maybe they'll seal better...we shall see Rolling Eyes Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Yeah. it's becoming a real pain,as it's only 4 years old ,but this problem has been ongoing since new, I think it's been attended to in that area at least 6 or 7 times including a new surround. But like I said its returned only 8 weeks having been resprayed.
I am beginning to wonder wether or not I am wasting my time though as it would appear they all seam to corrode in this spot.
I'm even starting to look round all Land Rovers I see parked up!

I think you need to demand them using a different bodyshop!

I have resigned myself eventually to a rotten surround - that's fine as it's not hard to replace... BUT the idea of a rotten bulkhead due to leaking water is much more worrying, especially as I can't see all behind the dash Sad

My 110 ends its warranty in April - I've worried so much in the past 3 years. Just look at my posts!
Now I'm relaxed that, unlike a family pet, it will only die gradually and can be brought back to life in improved (galvanised) form Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Well I'm going to see what they say tomorrow and see what the options are.I absolutly love the defender and wouldnt be with out one. But having read most of the posts in here I am gradually resigning my self to, "that's how they are." and if I was to get it repaired and resprayed or a new surround that it will just return in the future.

If a proper repair is to be done the windscreen will have to be removed so that the whole of the affected area (you won't see it all until the screen is out) is repaired, & painted. Then, the screen should be refitted with a new rubber, which should be sealed on both sides..against the body, & against the screen.
Cheers, Pickles.

Update. The body shop seams to think it is possibly paint over weld or sealant. Having cleaned the area and looked at it through a magnifying glass he could be right. But will keep an eye on it. But at least it's logged.
Thanks again chaps.

Sorry if I'm being daft, but my 14 plate 110's windscreen surround and the 'gutter' below it is entirely aluminium.

Has yours been suffering from aluminium corrosion, or were the surrounds steel until recently?

at 12 months old it went in to be repaired, they had removed the screen, unsure if they removed the surround but now at 3 years old it has not reappeared. However it does live in a garage, when I've driven it in the rain I've not had any water leaks and I've checked the usual places. It appears the sharp edges and seam do not take the original paint that well, it is clear on mine that this area has been cleaned up during repair. Id say I have had a succesful repair so it is possible DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Hi there. As far as I am aware the bulk head and surround is steel. I can assure you yours will show signs of corrosion. I haven't spoke to anybody's who's hasn't. So keep an eye on it.
Thumbs Up
