Puma stalling fuel supply issue
My Puma is in dock for a recurring stalling problem. ECU, injectors, fuel blockage, fuel filters have all been ruled out. Faulty fuel pump is the next culprit.

No fault codes.

Everything points away from an electrical issue.

Any thoughts?

Fuel tank vent pipe clear in the rear nearside wheel arch?

Or just try a short drive with a half empty tank and take the filler cap off to test. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop
Now a 2013 110 USW too.

Thanks chaps, but all these have been tried. Breathers all clear. Fuel line all clear. Tank clear. Cold filter clear. Fuel pump ok. Still no fault codes. ECU is fine.

Not stalling any more but running gutless. THIS IS DRIVING ME MAD!

Any more thoughts?

Still not solved. Thought I'd post up what's been tried in case it helps someone:

Swapped with another Vehicle and then swapped back again:
ECU
Air Flow Meter
Crank Sensor
Air charge Sensor
Removed fuel lines & ran from a can – (better at this stage)

Filled with 20Ltrs of diesel.
Road tested, vehicle would not stall but noticed lack of power.

Swapped injectors
Remove fuel tank and fuel lines and checked for blockage, dirt etc…
Checked intercooler pipes
Swapped fuel pump
Remove Front pipe exhaust to check cat was not blocked
Swapped turbo

I'll update in due course. I'm starting to want to ditch for a 2.5N/A Wolf 110.

I know this is turning into a bit of a monologue, but i'm updating to in the event that it will be helpful to someone in the future.

My problem has, apparently, been identified:

The fuel pump has a high pressure release valve and this was disintegrated. The symptoms were lack of power like a broken turbo, but the turbo was not broken.

This seems to have been the cause of the stalling when the fuel tank was on the red light. With a head of fuel, the stalling went.

Just to finish this thread off:

Yes this issue was the fuel pump high pressure release value which had failed. Let it be a suspected part if you experience unexplained stalling and loss of power.

This had never been experienced by the highly experienced Defender mechanics that i used.

Caterham, 'no' is the simple answer!

I didn't get the chance to spend any time with the 110 while it was being played with. I do however know that the high pressure release value is not an integral part of the fuel pump itself, so in theory might be relatively easy to get to. To replace start to finish i would doubt would be more than a 2 hour job for a mechanic. A cheap part too.

110seb - I think the hp valve is on the side of the common rail (nearest the bulkhead?). - as ever I stand to be corrected by those who know.

looks easy to replace but we're potentially talking BIG pressures and air locking the system so if its a cheap part AND easy to fit I might well be lining myself up for a new one ? Thumbs Up

Even my car has accused the same problems as that of 110SEB. The extreme randomness of the problem, the absence of error codes and the inability to reproduce the fault in the workshop made ​​it impossible to have a clear diagnosis of the problem.

All attempts to repair during the warranty period have failed, many parts replaced:

- Turbo
- Fuel tank cleaning
- Fuel filter + filter head
- Fuel lines between tank and filter head
- CHT sensor

Once out of warranty, worried that the car could stop on a dangerous road (motorway, gallery, curve etc.), I requested the workshop to do a one-shot replacement of the following components:

- Fuel pump with VCV valve embedded
- The common rail pipe with both valve/sensor at the ends
- ECU
- The entire engine cables/harness
- The entire fuel lines between fuel filter head and fuel pump

After 3 months and several thousand kilometers traveled, everything is ok.
I hope that the problem is now gone.

are you saying the following items have been completely replaced?

- Fuel pump with VCV valve embedded
