I also like this version (off course - I am Dutch ). I have it installed approx 4 years now without any problems. Before that I killed 2 head light switches within a few days because of melting contacts in the switch. ZeDedender, I did tap into the feed from the alternator, was very easy, but I have a 300 Tdi - don't know if there is much difference with the Puma alternator setup... Apparently the Puma is a bit "awkward" (in so many ways) compared to earlier models but that's okay. Originally I rigged it (in a rather ugly way) to the battery to test it (until I got LEDs) it so I'll just find a neater solution. In any event, there's a hell of a lot going on in the battery box already, so another wire won't hurt Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Matt,
As with a builder's house looking like a building site my battery box as an electrician looked a bit like a bowl of spaghetti (albeit a safe one). I decided to tidy the lot up and run in new cables for future use too. I used a Blue Sea 6-way and sorted it all out in one go, worth the efoort and makes future installations so much easier. Afterthought:
My only final decision re. the lights is whether to rig them to the main (starter) or auxiliary battery (via the BlueSea fuse box). One advantage might be that there will be no current drop with the second battery on starting as it's not normally connected. Also, even if the second battery runs flat, I can always connect the two while it charges. I can't help wondering if I've missed something though? I do admittedly suffer from mild OCD. That's why I'm so appreciated in the 'Marine Bodge It And Scarper Bigade' I still work to military aviation standards - Takes a little longer but only has to be visited once.

Hi ZeDefender,
regarding tapping power from the alternator in a Puma defender, it is quite easy actually. just on the driver side of the engine, you can find the alternator and the power(positive) output nut is quite exposed with a rubber cap on it. if you open the rubber cap, you find yourself a nut securing the main power cable to the car battery. what I did was put addtional wire there and tap the negative on the air con fixing nut. just want to confirm that, I believe all puma defender are fitted with relay to the headlights? they are the R122 relays on the diagram? THanks Martin |
