Roof Mounted sun shade/awning
Does anybody do a QD side awning that dosn't need to be bolted to a roof rack? I'd prefer QD and light cos I don't want drag it around everywhere because i can't be arsed to lug it off the roof IYKWIM and i'm trying to be roof rack free if at all possible.

Any thoughts? A man with no boat is a prisoner

You could use the manbo/Mantec roof bars and bolt a foxwing ( the manbo bars were designed specifically for this) I'm sure you could use the bars to bolt other awning onto if desired.

Would then be easy to remove. Take a look on the boab website

Cheers a little bit of research has found me the foxwing, looks OK if a little pricy but nice all the same.

I've got a lot to learn!!

Take a look at the A1 awning for a more reasonably priced alternative:

We have used the Oztent/Rhino Rack Foxwing for years and it is a great bit of kit Thumbs Up

It has 10 metre square of shade and with optional side panels is even better. Yes it is not cheap but used properly is very versatile bit of kit.

Out of the Rhino Rack stable is the Sunseeker awning herewhich is just a side awning but of the same quality as the Foxwings. Can be fitted/taken off vehicle quickly and easily.

we use a porch awning that leans on the back of the wagon and dosent need a roofrack (although we have one fitted...
there are several types around that will do the job - but here is ours

its held on by a long 'bungy' that goes over the back of the wagon to hold it in place. Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

Cheers I plan to ground tent so I am trying avoid a roof rack.possibly two roof bars and a roof basket or tray to carry the tent.

Hence the question as to whether a fox wing type awning is to heavy ?

The alternative is a rear awning

used tiger seal to fasten alloy caravan rail to defender and got the missis to sew the trim to the awning total cost around £15, it works really well

i use a military 9 x 9 frame with a gazebo roof I had made for it. light, 5 mins to erect, portable and stable. it's in front of my other 9x9 which I had zips sewn into on one of the long sides.
