Raised air intakes
Need to get a raised air intake. Want it to be fully waterproof, so a snorkel.

Had a mantec plastic jobby on the Td5, which I think is the best looking, although the newer ones are not so nice, but was never impressed with its seal, and the fact it used the original LR pipe work from snork to air box. I also had issues with it in very heavy rain whilst on the motorway when there was massive amounts of spray that it sucked up. I did manage to get it fully sealed, but this was mainly due to my skills with silicon sealer, but not ideal.

So the questions.
Are any other better?
Does the safari seal better?
Does the safari replace pipe to air filter housing?
Am I correct in thinking that during high spray situation the head could be rotated, and help?
Any issues with safari snork?
Can you fit different heads on the safari or old style mantec?

Thanks for ready

Andy

I'd go Safari if I was going to at all, and yes you can indeed rotate the head as far as I am aware.
A good seal on them too as they are a Snorkel and not a RAI like the Mantec.

Andy, I have used Safari snorkels with no problems what so ever.

Yes you can rotate the head but never really felt the need too.

You can get a pre cleaner for the safari snorkel. However if you have a light bar/roof rack that might impede on the fitting of it. If that is the case the Aussies have a sock which fits inside the main tube.

I've got a factory one on my TD5. Very pleased with that.
Tackles bonnet depths without any problem.

(More than I can say for the door seals Rolling Eyes )

Be careful what you get. Most are only RAI and rely on the seal to the wing. The seal inside the wing from the factory is not always err sealed.

On my TD5 the Safari / Puma Snorkels are RAI but if you use the 300tdi version it's a proper Snorkel. It does not rely on the seal to the wing but is fully moulded with a connection for a hose direct to the filter housing. I do not know if the 300tdi will fit your Puma but a look on the Safari web sites specification pages will tell you. It did fit my TD5 easily and no modification is necessary. Fitting the earlier one is no go for a Tdci as air box is in a completely different place, it's now by the off side headlight.

In that case check out the Snorkel for the V8. Same install on the wing but longer connecting pipe to the air box. Might work

Any updates as I too am looking at getting a proper snorkel, the Safari SS580HF which is recomended for the Puma is only a RAI.
I have a 2013 Puma 2.2.

I had a Safari Snorkel fitted to my 07 Defender. Although the original pipework from the air filter box to the wing side intake seemed to be retained, the installer properly sealed all connections including the duckbill drain of the air filter box. Good quality workmanship should mean that it is watertight. I have had Safari snorkels fitted to almost all my 4x4's and although connecting pipework might differ from vehicle to vehicle, all connections have been sealed with good quality sealants. The only time a vehicle has ingested water, the 4x4 did not have a snorkel/RAI fitted. Luckily it was a petrol engine, but I ended up cracking the head. I avoid deep water where I can. Been there, done that.

If fitted properly I would not think there should be an issue. To be honest I was more worried about the under-seat box electrics flooding, water pouring through the door gaps and water entering the floor gaps than the Safari snorkel causing problems. Smile

In the end I brought the safari SS580HF, which retains all the original pipe work. I did this for a couple of reasons, the V8 one that comes with a length of pipe is £300 (nearly £100 more), I could not find what size the pipe is, so don't know if compatible. Also the SS580HF is high flow, so won't restrict the air supply as much as the other models. I have the advantage of being very good with sealer as a bathroom fitter, and have managed to seal my old mantec plastic jobby on the Td5 so am confident this will be easy enough.

The ideal situation would be to get hold of a V8 snork and compare with Tdci system and see if it can be made to fit, but not sure it would due to position of abs unit.
