I got three of the small motorcycle cteks they seem ok but if left on all the time seem to dry batterys out now on time switch so only come on for 15mins and that works better
got couple of the mid sized 3 amp ones seem ok but never left on all the time and got a 7 amp one on the wall in workshop its got the recon mode etc never found that mode to be much good, when charging sometimes it comes up that battery has a fault and stops charging when I know it is good . when a battery is really flat it will not charge it ,I found a transformer charger (old style charger ) better for that. found all automatic chargers have they faults when trying to charge really flat batterys so overall yes they do work ok for topping up charge but there not that good would I buy another one I think I would look around at others first |

I have the 5 and think its great. Taken the defender back up from the light being left on in the boot so would have been pretty drained. Battery was working as before the flat, so pretty pleased with that.
Just make sure you're happy with the amp size time to charge the battery. Ie 5amp is 10 hours for 50 amp battery roughly. Very neat and tidy size wise, plus can trickle a car left in the garage so it starts up. |

MXS5.0 here too. Works a treat on the Defender. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

MXS 7.0 for me as it can also give a supply voltage to the vehicle when doing diagnostics and writing to the modules, especially handy to have fitted when a drop in battery voltage risks stopping the write process.

MSX 10 for me with all the whistle and bells, good bit of kit. Don't make old people mad.

Can you use the 13pin towing socket adaptor with the MXS 10? I want to be able to charge it without leaving the doors open or opening up the passenger seat compartment.

Don't see why not. A similar Ctek adapter can be bought from Martin for the 13 pin plug. Explained in below thread.

Yeah I've just ordered one of Martins adapters. I'm just debating with myself as to which one to buy. Think I'm going to go with the 10 if it works with it. Michael

I have a 10 for the Defender, but need one for my Suzuki 1200 Bandit battery, C or YTX-12BS.
Would the 5 or 7 be best? How does Optimate compare? I used to have 1 of those. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender |

make up a charging adaptor out of a caravan/trialer plug and you can charge the battery without lifing the bonnet.

motorcycle should be charged slowly no way should you use a 10 amp charger even a 5 is too much good makes of motorcycle battery have max charge rate printed on them and most are 1-2 amps that's why ctek do the 0.8 amp charger for bikes ( I found even the 0.8 left connected seemed to dry the battery out so I leave the charger connected to bike then have mains time switch set to come on 15 mins a day and that's enough to keep bike fully charged ) YTX-12BS is about 10ah so max charge should be 1 amp To learn the proper maximum charging rate for your battery, look at the alphanumeric code printed across the case of the battery and you will usually find its Amp/Hour rating. If it's not obvious, check your owners manual. The proper trickle-charging rate for a motorcycle battery is one-tenth of the A/H rating for as long as 10 hours, depending on how discharged it is. Charging faster than 2.02.5 amps causes overheating which can warp and even melt the battery case if ignored. High-rate charging also speeds up internal corrosion, and its visible sign is sediment buildup under the cells, which if it reaches high enough, will also permanently short out the battery. Too high a charging rate can also result in a battery that does not hold a charge because too-rapid transformation of the lead sulfate may actually trap sulfate under a surface coating of rejuvenated lead, producing a battery that can test okay but fails quickly. Thankfully, this last effect can be reversed with a very slow charge of no more than 1¼20 (yes, that's one-twentieth) of rated capacity for 25 to 30 hours. |
