He said it just cut out, air filter is above the waterline and I checked that first.

My 90 is on 315/75x16 tyres with a 4" lift but I still got a wet bum, so a standard X-Tec on 235/85x16 will not go as deep and not only that I am happy to take my old 200tdi in deep but suppose a snorkel would be something worth getting if this rain keeps up and maybe a wet suite. Andy.

Well done Andy your obviously a true gent at that depth I would have left him there !

If that drove away after a bit of time he was extremely lucky given a lot of the electricals would be under water at that depth ! 2020 P300 HSE

Well done to Andy Thumbs Up

Looking at level of the water with respect to the fuel filler cap, I would also be concerned about getting water into the fuel tank. How water tight are those seals??

Anyway that young lad does seem to be remarkably lucky that he could drive off afterwards.

I must admit I would have had second thoughts about driving that far into the water.

Maybe this is a reminder for people to check what gear they are carrying? We tend to carry a few straps with us so that we can select what is best combination to use. By using a longer strap/or a combination of straps then depending on the situation the vehicle could be on better/drier/less icy ground and so might be able to carry out recovery easier/drier/safer.

The stupid thing was that I have a fantastic hydraulic winch on the front and have more ropes than you could shake a stick at in the back but I felt time was a factor and wanted to whip it out quickly if you know what I mean. Rolling with laughter

The newer fuel caps must seal quite well as he had hardly any fuel in the tank to start with, he said the warning light was on before and after a few mins ran well, have to say a fuel drain and filter would be the first thing I would have done but not at the side of the road. Andy.

As discussed at length in another thread the Puma fuel cap is totally sealed under normal operating conditions. His tank breather will have been underwater so if the engine was running long enough, or if the water was significantly colder than the air, a small amount of water will have entered.

Bearing in mind that the air intake is under water in the rescue photos the driver has been extraordinarily lucky, much more so yhan he deserves! Let us hope that he will have learned from his close shave!

(Edited to remove an inappropriately critical comment, for which I apologise.)

He is a very nice young chap, I can't say I haven't made a cock of myself when learning the "do's and don't" in life.

As some say........learn by your mistakes. Andy.

The wise learn from other peoples mistakes.

The sensible learn from their own mistakes.

The foolish never learn from their own mistakes.

Have made the odd mistake or two or three or four......... in my life Razz

Hopefully that young lad, once he has recovered from the rollicking/thick ear will join a local club and learn about Defenders and their capabilities in a relatively safe environment.

I have to say I nearly did thin on 2007 when I misjudged the depth of water using a farm gate to measure not realising the verge where the gate was was nearly a foot higher than the road! Got the back of the bow wave to touch the wing mirrors on the disco1 a change of pants and sell the disco (carpets never dried out and had load of electrical problems) was needed, a snorkel fitted to all subsequent vehicles just in case.

I will not judge but glad all is ok

A 'nice' comment by the AA. Apparently they have had 1500 call outs to stranded drivers.

It included call outs to drivers who ignored road close signs, blindly following their sat navs or other drivers into deep water or 4 x 4 drivers who thought their vehicles had amphibious qualities!

That X-tech driver should be banished to Shame Island for letting us all down.
