2006 TD5 won't turn over -- Any Help
Hi,

Now yesterday it was fine & no hint of any battery/Startrer issues. It has so far started every time first time, even after 4 weeks without use!

This morning I jumped in, went to start it, lights on dash came on, waited for glow plug light to go out & then turned key!! Nothing. Not even a click!

The fuel pump is priming, just nothing from position II to III!

I though the battery may be the issue so I charged that today, then this evening! Nothing! Same issue.

I put multimeter across battery & it's showing 12.6, drops to 12.3 when I turn to position III

I noticed the immobiliser light rapidly blinking when I lock it, so I swapped the battery on the fob, No change. I tried the spare, Nothing

Any other things I should check?

Well my immobiliser light blinks very fast for a while after the vehicle has been locked so wouldnt worry about that, just check it isnt blinking rapidly when trying to start it. Well if you are sure the battery is good and you have all dash lights then you want to be checking you have a trigger voltage down at the starter motor if you have then its not immobiliser related and therefore it is likely to be a problem with the starter motor solenoid. Check all your terminals on starter and earths etc. 2001 TD5 110 County Station Wagon - sold

Cheers,

Embarassed Embarassed Now silly question alert!! Were is the starter motor located in the engine bay? Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

No, when I try to start it, the immobiliser light is out! But there is a resounding silence. I did notice the stereo lights go out. So perhaps it is the battery! I've put it on charge & I'll see tomorrow.

It seems to have happened so quick though, no problems at all before. It had a long run up to Pembrokeshire over the weekend too.

Off the top of my head there is a starter relay behind the fuse box in front of the gearsticks, have you tried to see if there is any power to the starter motor situated on the RHS rear, look under the brake servo. When you turn the key to start the relay should click.

Check small power wire to solenoid on starter motor. Disconnect and re connect. This may be enough to clean the contacts.
I had this problem outside my village shop when I called in before arriving home. Paid for goods, came outside to Land Rover and it did just what you described. I had the drivers seat up checking main fuses etc, but still nothing. Called Land Rover Assisstance, along came Green Flag man and he just walk up, opened bonnet, stretched in and then said..'now try it'. And she started. Apparently its a common problem.
Well I had the same on my V8 Disco a year later .

Is the battery in the key fob ok?

I was told it needs it to start the vehicle, and the fob has to be in range, so if the battery has gone, it can prevent the car starting. Current:D4 HSE

Try turning on the ignition, run a wire from the main feed on the starter motor to the small wire of the solenoid (bridging it out). Hopefully it should start turning over.

Thanks for all the help guys,

It turns out it was the small wire to the solenoid!!!! Crazy, I did what Romadog suggested & it sprang into life like usual!

Crazy that such a small inconspicuous wire can cause such issues!

Oh well, I knw what to check if it happens again!

Thanks again, so much much help available on here.

The copper contacts in the starter is on its way out. So when you turn the key, the solinoid energizes to throw the pin to the copper contacts. When worn, the pin does not make contact. So no sound. You can try turning off n on n cranking till it can contact, tap the starter with a mallet n it should be ok. I had these symptom n after removing cleaning the relay wire n having this no start situation in the strangest situation, I had the starter rebuild n all was good. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.
