Fuel gauge failure -Sorted!...Not!
300tdi 90
So, my total rebuild has been on the road a week and the fuel gauge has stopped working, its connected at both ends, sender and gauge. There are 2 wires on the sender, if I join them together should the gauge give a reading? Sender is Shi*tpart so i wouldn't be surprised if thats the culprit.....any suggestions?

Paul

Hi Paul, The 2 wires should be 1 for fuel gauge and 1 for low fuel light. There is sometimes a 3rd wire for an earth. If you short the wires in turn out onto a metal part of the body you should get the fuel light to come on with 1 wire and the fuel gauge should rise and show full when you short the other wire out . If the gauge rises then you should earth the sender itself to the body to check that it has a good earth. If the gauge still does not show a reading when the wires are connected back up to the sender then it is indeed knackered. If the gauge does not show a reading then it is either faulty or there is a problem with the wiring running to it.Hope this helps! Very Happy

Sorted! The specific earth had come off the terminal in the engine bay! Thanks to those who responded!
The joys of snagging a rebuild!
