Air suspension on a 90
Hello,

I thought that i would put it on here, i have just ordered my vlair system and p38 air bags in the start process of making my 90 ride on air. i wondered if there is anyone out there that has any info regarding the air input into the bags, i was told by p38 spares that it is just a 6mm dia tube, but i dont know whether this is direct into the bag or there is other valves etc that are in the top of the bag? Does anyone know? Also if there is anyone out there wanting to do it, i would be glad to work with you on this project. I am goiong to try and keep all the details and photos logged down, as it would make an interesting conversion.

fitting air bags, compressor, pipe work and valves is not a big problem .. its the level sensors electronic side in more the problem .. or if it can be done manually with pressure regulators

mate had a classic range rover with air suspension fitted maybe 15-20 years ago that seem to work ok ..but worth all the work not sure

i am going to use festo maual regulators as this is an easy option and we have all the parts on the shelf!!

worth the hassel.......i'd say so, it makes it different as well as functional and comfortable.

On my old Disco 2 the pipes were a push fit into a a union on top of the airbag. I replaced the pipes from the compressor to the bags but don't recall there being any other valves.

I'm guessing the P38 bags are fairly similar. Be careful when routing the pipes, being plastic they tend to rub through if fouling any bodywork or the chassis due to vibration. 2015 90 XS CSW TDCi - Beautiful

I have considerwd air ride, but it seems yo work in the opposite to the desired affect. For instance on road the ride needs to be smooth yet firm, and off road needs to be soft but raised.

To gain the height off road means stiffening the ride.

To drop the height on road means softning it.

Im open to suggestiin on this as I still really like the idea of fitting air ride.

Can I ask are you using a bag and shock setup or a bag and spring?

Each bag needs to be a different pressure for the vehicle to sit level Whistle

i have order new p38a air bags and i am going to use all festo valving gear and guages and have a manual set up for adjustment under my cubby box or in front of it. I was going to run the rears and the fronts as two pairs, but it can be dodgy, even with a compnsating valve in the middle. The lower you go the softer.....this is ideal coz you get a nice ride and it gives you the pimp look. I have ordered a vlair compressor from america, heavy duty system as this can be used for tyres and tools as well. I will have this all mounted inside with my 240v inveter as well.

I guess most people hate pimping up defenders, but i have had two years of off road mud and wading, now the time has come for performance and pimp?!......... Laughing Thumbs Up

It is nearly complete now, i have put all the air bags on and they are running fine just on Shreader valves so i have to manually adjust the spings. The ride is excellent, it is like a medium duty set of springs, but the harder you ride them, the softer they feel. What i mean is, (for those of you who have a disco 3 or new rangey you will know what i mean) if you hit a speed hump at 20 you feel it a lot!! but if you hit it at 50/60 mph, it just gets 'absorbed' Whistle

Will put some photos in my gallery as soon as poss

Haha... Sounds good not stopping for speed bumps.

Looking forward to the pics. And also a installation guide and a list of used materials??

Any updates on this Will.i.am?

Im William and am at university just now doing electrical and mechanical engineering. Thinking about doing this to my motor but i would be more interested in the electrical side of things. I would be looking to run a micro controller and electrical valves to increase and decrease the pressure was you go so that it sits level automatically with weight and with cornering. How far did you get with your automation? William

Are the P38 bags a straight swap for the springs
