TD5 oil check procedure
Hello,

I have just joined and already looking for advice... I own 2002 110 TD5. Recently I have changed motor oil and both oil filters. I have put app. 7,4 l of 5W30 oil in and the dipstick reads almost full (in the morning when the engine is cold). What I am interested in is when should you check motor oil level - when the engine is cold or when it is hot (turn off and wait 5 minutes then check)? My local Defender Owners manual states that the engine should be cold when checking but on the other hand English version of Defender 00MY Owner`s handbook states the other way...

Thank you for your comments.

Best regards,

Peter

I've always checked mine when cold. Working on the theory, that if the engine is still warm (i.e just been ran) then oil might still be dropping back to a normal level??? 1999 Defender TD5 110

I always check mine when its cold.
When I first get mine in November from a dealer it was reading above the upper level but I have dropped about 3/4 litre and its spot on now Wink

From the owners handbook Oil level should be checked cold. If it must be checked with the engine warm the vehicle should stand for five minutes to allow the oil to drain back in to the sump. In my experience it will read slightly higher with the engine warm (assuming you have let it drain back in to the sump).

Thank you for fast responses - it is cold check then. I was a bit concerned as I`ve put only 7,4l of oil into and manual states 8,2l when changing both filters.

I generally put 7.5 litres in mine for an oil / filter change but always go by the dip stick checked cold. Even if you wait the recommended 5 minutes after running all the oil will not have returned to the sump.
