United Kingdom 1987 Defender 90 200 Tdi HT Barolo Black
Replacement Battery
Looks like my battery is in need of an upgrade.
Its only 650CCA and is starting to fail now so guess i'll replace it before the cold weather starts. It can be parked up from one weekend to the next (sometimes longer). I also have a conditioner for my bike so will stick that on during really cold weather when its stood for a while.
Thing is, i'm not sure what to get. The one in there isn't standard, its just been stuck in the battery box and allowed to 'float around' (I've fixed it down since I had it)
The engine is a 200tdi disco, sitting in a 1987 Defender 90.
There is nothing drastic to draw current at the moment but I may well ne fitting a winch in the future. Also thinking of upgrading to a dual battery at a later date so ideally want something that I can add to.
I've heard 95AH and a 850CCA as a minimum, is this about right? and what is the best make?

A couple of times now its been the solitary clicking when trying to start it, a quick boost with jump leads or charger and it fires up ok. I will be checking current draw to ensure there isn't a fault and no, i've not checked battery voltage or alternator output yet. I feel the battery is past its best and needs changing anyway.

So, whats the collectives recommendations for batteries?

I think (without looking at the battery) but, I'm pretty sure I got this spec for my TD5

I think tatra805 gave the best advise as to Defender batteries. In short, unless you plan to use your truck in extreme conditions, Land Rover's choice for the Puma of a Varta Professional Deep Cycle Marine Leisure , 90Ah/800CCA battery is just excellent. My own original battery is now 6 years old and still going strong- Thumbs Up
Read tatra's well educated opinion Bow down in below thread.
http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic16605.html You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
