No steering damper Surely the shteering wheel was dancing around the place on uneven surfaces?
Track rod ends- mine lasted 40,000 miles but a lot of that was rough tracks- but at the same time, if it hasn't got a steering damper it would put a lot more vibrations/ stresses on them which would result in excess wear. Glyn |

missing damper...
seems strange - its not like they're hard to get hold of or cost the earth or difficult to fit? |

Can/do they just fall off ? Could it have been removed for a reason ?

they're bolted on so I doubt (anything is possible of course but I've never heard of it).
can't imagine why it wouldn't be replaced unless it was simply faulty / leaking and someone opted not to replace it? I've also not heard of them being nicked in the middle of the night.....but once again anything is possible. |

john i can say that whilst i owned the vehicle it had not been offroaded !!! the steering damper was removed due to siezure and not replaced at the wifes request as she found it easier to drive without it !!! it was her daily driver not mine. as for the worn track rod ends these were not noted on the last mot or service as requiring attention and havent caused me reason to check for wear ???? if you have any further queries then please feel free to call me on my mobile no. john |

Hi John
OK many thanks for the update, that explains it I think, The garage were totally bemused and slightly worried as to the wear on the track rods and the lack of the damper, but i guess the lack of the damper would explain the worn track rods as some people have said here. i run a 90 without a steering damper, its not the end of the world as the OP has obviously noticed by not realising it wasn't there.
TREs do wear, treat them as a service item, they are cheap and easy to change. on my trayback they go on avg one every other day of use. on mainly road going vehicles you will get alot more out of them (90k on my last td5) Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

The steering damper on my 90 MY11 unbolted itself and fell off, and if it wasn't for the fact that I heard it hit the steering guard, I probably wouldn't have known, certainly from on road driving, there was no difference in steering feel at all.
Mine only unbolted itself at one end, but I suppose it's possible that yours may have detatched itself completely. Pete |

Personally, I wouldn't worry about a Defender being used off-road. A bit poor show on previous owner selling it without refitting a new steering damper though, but may have genuinely forgot about it.
Has it had brake fluid, coolant, diff oils, gearbox oils changed? I suspect not given mileage. However, if I bought this, that's what I would change along with doing an engine oil change, air filter change and finally topping up hubs and propshafts with correct grease. That way you know you are starting ownership from a good reference point and you can then keep up good maintenance from now on. That along with regular use, should mean you have relatively trouble free use from your 90 Have fun with your new purchase. |

My steering damper on our 2.4 departed the vehicle on the M40 northbound. Had never been offroad!
