Bluetooth hands free stereo head unit
Hi there,
Has anyone any experience of fitting one of the new(ish) stereo head units that can connect to a mobile phone for hands free calls etc. Halfords have a Pure unit with remote mic which looks ok but you can't beat a second opinion.

Depending on the stereo you have fitted you may need an iso connector (a few quid at Halfords). No idea about the specific stereo your looking at but a google search will probably give better results.

If you want BT cheap go for Parrot system and keep your current radio, if nit go for premium brands only. Sony, pioneer, clarion, Kenwood and such like.

Thanks for your replies, I am replacing the original LR unit and as a sat nav is on the horizon too I want to keep the number of extras on the dash to a minimum. Therefore a new blue tooth head unit looks the best option.

Have you considered some of the double Din options moving the excess switches to the side of the console? ****CENSORED****

Can you not just Google the pure unit you are looking at to find user reviews ??? Guessing as your looking at a pure you are going DAB Thumbs Up Not sure how the BT works on a sat nav, but would prefer it on the headunit as will automatically mute and play audio through you speakers Thumbs Up

In my 90 and the Rangie we have JVC headunits which have a USB port on the front for the phone (we are both on iPhones). You can use the phone hands free on either blue tooth or through the USB port. The advantage of the USB is that it is charging the phone at the same time.

As for sat nav, we have gone over to iPhone apps - so nothing extra to carry or keep charged, or to take up space in the dash/console/windscreen.

PS. Our JVC units came as DAB ready - we bought the DAB units separately, which are small and neat enough to hide away behind the main unit in the dash, had them about 3 years now. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

I got a great Pure unit from Halfords on an online deal, (worth still checking)

It has Bluetooth and DAB, all fully working. The Bluetooth works well, and you can select numbers and other options by rotating the volume knob.

My phone connecting to it has caused more problems than the head unit.

In reality, if my phone wasn't such a pain in the butt, it would work perfectly! 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

Fitted one of these (Pioneer MCH350BT) - it's got blue tooth, USB and a separate line in on the front but no CD player built in. My android phone auto syncs with it whenever I start the car which makes the hands free phone work and also the radio will play music stored on my phone. It comes with a microphone which I put on the pillar by my seat belt, and the phone sound comes out the speakers - my girlfriend called when I was out and thought it sounded fine (at about 60mph).

The only real downside is that the buttons are a bit small when bouncing along; you have to wait until you're in 1st/3rd/5th and steady your hand on the gear stick and then try to press the button you want Laughing .

Thanks for all the replies, after a lot of faffing I have gone for a Kenwood USB head unit and a Parott Ck3100. Total price is about the same as the Pure unit and hopefully dedicated kit will be better. Will let you know when it's all in this weekend.
