I'd go as far as to say starter motor solonoid. You can probably get refurb kits much like the Td5 ones for less than a tenner. Sometimes taking them apart and cleaning the contacts will do the job.

Thanks for the tips, the thing is the power comes back after leaving it. Therefore if the conection was faulty it would stay off. I am wondering if this is an immobiliser issue but i am not sure if the immobiliser works by killing all power or just the ignition or both.
Just to clarify, if you put the ignition to the first click or off there is no power, the alarm does not work and niether do the lights or radio. Sometimes i have all power but no start. |

Is it a loud click as from the solenoid or a gentle relay click from behind the dash?

Check your earth (and +ve while you're at it) on your battery, can cause some weird symptoms. A bad connection will not allow enough current to be drawn, so make sure both clamps are 100% tight. Cheers, David

Thanks David, it was loose. Hopefully that was the issue. Feel a fool for not checking that myself!

No worries, fingers crossed it was the problem!
Drove me crazy having similar issues after I had fitted my amp and extra speakers which involved disconnecting the battery. Would make a loud click and lose all power when I tried to start the engine. Now we know! Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

I had it too once, you can find find too that it'll start fine when you leave home but as you travel to your destination a few bumps can make the connection worse. So when you park up and then come back to go home you'll get the symptoms you described.
Some petroleum jelly on the terminals can give an even better secure connection. IMO the earth connection on the battery is the worse one for being loose, it has a not very efficient clamping bolt. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
