All power off and on again ! ..
Hi .. had a problem on the way to work this morning .. happily cruising along and suddenly lost all electrical power. All the gauges went off for a few seconds, I lost engine power .. then it all came back on again. (mileage trip was reset)

Has anyone got an idea what caused this? .. should I be worried? .. is it a sign of something about to fail?

Thanks

Sounds a bit simple but have you checked the battery terminals are tight? Worth checking anyway. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Out of interest, did you notice if the alternator warning light lit up and if the temp gauge went to max?

You might also want to check the condition of the connections to the main relay (grey one, third from rear under the o/s front seat). All sorts of weird effects can be caused by a malfunction of this relay.

I suspect that there will be several things which could cause your symptom, much like the intermittent starting problems which I now have back after a 3-year absence. Obvious first candidates are the security of the battery connections (as Steve suggests), the relays (as above) possibly a defect with the ignition switch (these have been known to crack) and possibly a fault with the passive immobiliser.

If you're lucky, it'll never happen again, but you'll now always worry that it might! Big Cry

Hi .. thanks for the replies. I checked the battery terminals and all okay there.

I didn't notice the temp gauge going up (in that second or so I was planning my escape route from the busy fast flowing bit of traffic i was in Confused ) There was no light coming on .. everything off.

I will check the relays. I do have another intermittent starting issue that could also be part of this. Occasionally it won't start and I have to lock, wait for the alarm to arm, unlock and then all is fine again. I'm assuming that this is an issue with the immobiliser. Could these be linked? Any known fix? 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

It did it again today as I pulled off a roundabout and accelerated hard up a hill bit of dual carriageway. The needles in the gauges went up and down a few times and the fuel warning light flashed on a couple of times. Engine kept going however there was a loss of power for a couple of seconds. May possibly have a bit of an intermittent misfire, but that could be paranoia. Can't see anything obvious .. Loose cables etc.

Any more ideas? Big Cry 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

You said earlier that you have a starting issue? When it happens does the starter motor turn? If the starter motor doesn't turn, what is happening on the IPAC ? Do the instrument lights go out or dim or do they stay bright?? Also is the alarm fob on the ignition key? Have you changed the fob battery lately? To me it could be an immobilizer fault but looking at the year of your Puma it could also be an ECU fault. But before declaring the ECU is at fault it is best to work through possible causes to rule them out first. Thumbs Up

The starting issue can be linked to the immobiliser but a test for this is when it happens do the following: -

Remove key from ignition.
Step out of vehicle. Exclamation (you have to do this due to key distance from unit)
Lock vehicle; Unlock vehicle
Enter key in ignition and start.

If okay then yes it is a known issue that has no correction note from JLR.....

I have only come across one vehicle that has done what you describe but it was not a Land Rover... It was due to the main wiring loom through the bulk head shorting out.... But if you are getting the "known" start issue then I would probably guess it is linked.

Hope that helps.

Dose the ECU earth though its fixings to the chassis??? And are they tight??? Pass, I've never been too close to a puma, but would suggest Immobilizer or a bad earth

Thanks for your replies

Lorryman100 - when I have the starting issue it will start for a few seconds and cut out, on trying to restart the starter doesn't spin. The lights don't dim on the display. I remove the key, lock (whilst still in the car), wait for the alarm to arm completely, unlock, open and close the door and then it starts no problem. I have recently changed the battery on the key fob. I may try the other fob and see if I get the same starting problem.

The way the immobilizer works on the Puma is to immobilize the starter and injector circuits. If this happened intermittently whilst driving it would result in a lack of power or a perceived missing of the engine to the driver as the injector circuits are being immobilized. This fault has cropped up a few times in the past and without going over old ground do a search of my username, merlin and 10AS. I would be more specific but I am away in the tin tent using a mobile MIFI in a non 3G area where the signal is intermittent. Thumbs Up

So far so good. I swapped the key fobs and started using the spare. So far this week about 400 miles and no issues. A little odd as it was the fob that I was using that had the new battery in it. Confused 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X
