LED or Halogen ?
LED: 3 options: JW Speaker 8700 , Trucklites or Noldens (trucklites £600, speakers £750-£800) Halogen: Wipac Crystals or IPF's with Osram Nightbreakers or PIAA Ultra Brilliance (£100-150 ish) Don't over do the bulbs, 55/60s are MAX WATTAGE otherwise you either need a relay or your switch will melt |

Lots of options out in the market place.
Depends on exactly what you want. Assuming keeping legal with correct type approval and RHD for the UK market Change of bulb to things such as Osram Nightbreakers, will give about 20% more light then standard headlight bulbs. Cost around £25-30 Trucklite Lites, E marked cost about £600 from Mudstuff. Sealed to IP 69K Light output? Uncertain at this moment in time. JW Speaker, type approved available for about £850 from Mobilecentre etc. Sealed to IP67 Light output calculated effective lumens 950 lumens Nolden Lights. E marked cost about £925 from 4x4 Overlander etc. Sealed to IP 6K9K, Measured Light output 1700 lumens. Brightest road legal LED headlights. None of those will involve wiring change. All should be road legal in UK Brendan |

Slight hijack , but I find main beam fine but dip very poor with standard lights
Do the updated bulbs or led stuff improve both dip and main |

We have three Defenders on our drive.
Red 110 fitted with standard LR headlights plus Lightforce lights. Black 110 fitted with JW Speaker 8700 plus Lazer lamps. White 90 fitted with just Nolden 7" LED headlights. Barbara does not like driving at night time these days but will drive the white 90 just fitted with the Noldens. Personally we have not yet tried the Trucklites so we can not comment from personal experience on their light output. So our personal experience is yes the Nolden headlights are vastly superior to standard headlights in both dim and main beam mode. Brendan |

Will you possibly be trying the Trucklites soon Brendan? I have seriously considered the Trucklites, as ultimately , don't intend to have a single filament bulb left in mine! Including spotlights I know they are expensive, even the Trucklites despite being cheaper than the other two, but I suspect, even a Trucklite will be brighter than standard, plus factor in efficiency of LEDs, a far less significant drain on battery power, and ultimately fuel, and theoretically going to last for yonks. Also, I find it reassuring that the military have happily been using them for some time... My personal opinion on filament lighting now is that it's quickly becoming redundant in this day and age... 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top |

I think & know for me the LED headlamps are worth every penny
Had them now on the both 110 UTE's and about to order some for the new addition I'm aware that the coating on the rear of the lamps has come off on some its never effected the beam or the look of the lamp apart from the bit you cant see I take out component’s from a wide variety of vehicles from 10K Ups to 250k Lambos and they all corrode in some way Just my thoughts |

Hi Interlet, sorry we have not tried the Trucklite lights and have currently no plans to try them out. It would be nice to try out every available LED headlights on the market but time and money does not permit that.
On the Trucklite site there is no mention of light output for their LED headlights. However have just noticed on the website that a figure of 1300 lumens is mention on the Mudstuff website. I assume that is raw lumens rather then effective lumens or actual measured light output. So a brief comparison of three LED headlights Trucklite lights £600 Raw (?) Lumens 1300 IP69K JW Speaker 8700 £850 1,350-1,770 Raw Lumens; 650-760 Effective Lumens IP67 Nolden 7" £925 Lumens 1880lm / 2400lm Measured lumens: 1550lm / 1700lm IP6K9K All the above are road legal and available in RHD for the UK market The IP rating of IP6K9K is a German standard and apart from the watertightness rating shows they are watertight against jetwashing for vehicles which need regular jetwash cleaning. Yes, the Trucklites are used by the American military and have a good Ingress Protection IP rating. However the light output does not appear to be as good as other options available. Must admit I agree with Ken about the benefits of LED headlights, as for me they make night time driving especially on unlit country roads, easier and less stressful. Brendan |

Hello experts,
While you are talking headlights ... I am about to a) drive a German BMW to the UK and b) drive my UK TD5 to Switzerland for it to have a few months R&R in the winter there. So, what are the current rules and regs about dipping in the right (or left) direction? I have been in Oz for 23 years and am not up to date with EU and country rules, I don't want a 100 Euro/S Franc/quid fine every time I cross a border. Thanks. (I guess I should think about -20C and how to prepare for it.. are there any old posts about that?) Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ... |

Its the only light mod I have done and the improvement was quiet noticeable. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Can anyone quantify how much better Crystal lights are compared with standard? I am already using Phillips Xtreme bulbs and as I am now doing a lot more driving at night and at times on country roads I am thinking I might need to upgrade. It's not so much the beam I need but dip lighting up the verge.
But for me LEDs seem very expensive. Thanks BM52 |
