Mystery Wires / Connector
Morning all. When I had the instrument panel out on my 2005 DC recently, I noticed 2 wires that weren't connected to anything - an orange one and a purple one. I took pics, taped up the bare ends and forgot about them. They were in amongst the looms in the area behind the binnacle. This pic shows the end of the orange with the purple behind it. Any ideas what they might be for?

I also came across this connector in the same area. What do you reckon this is?

I know the pics aren't great, but any ideas would be welcome.

Cheers.

If the orange one runs back to the green box above your drivers side speaker it's the alarm aerial.

Make it longer and you don't have to stand right next to the car to unlock it

I think the orange wire is the alarm lead (acts like an aerial) for the remote alarm fob when you push it and so probably should be bare at the end.....I think?

There is a thread here on the forum somewhere about extending this wire to get the remote fob to work further away from the vehicle.

(Now I see Tiger has posted already about this Rolling Eyes )

Just a word of warning

A mate of mine who is a copper said that there are gangs with equipment which scan for signals sent by remote locking. Apparently they wait for you to walk off then unlock it.

Not sure if this is old news.

I've heard of that above but at the end of the day extending the antenna for the LR will make no difference to that. After all the LR is the input and the key the output. Without the fob signal there is no issue to be honest I don't think it's a super strong signal as is. Basically without the fob signal it's useless, but I don't proclaim to be an expert.
These things can happen but rare and it's no good going around under a cloak of fear, just avoid dodgy areas and fit as much additional security as you see fit. Not a lot else you can do. Biggest problem is putting Defenders in at risk areas full stop, a lot of us I think just being the types we are tend to park in the corned of car parks etc which really isn't good. The quieter it is where it's parked the better for thieves where they can get on with their activity without being spotted of disturbed. No Guts, No Glory.

Yeah, I've heard of that too. Unfortunately / fortunately I haven't got anything as luxurious as remote locking on my DC Laughing Maybe that's a project for the future though as hopefully the scanning method of gaining entry is not too widely used.

The 10AS already on your truck uses the following :

1. rolling code
2. time sync

each time the plip is pressed. so the rolling code is incremental. (64k numbers) there's a tolerance value as well, which can be set via the diagnostic tool. time sync, is also used so that makes it harder that you need to have both in sync before it will unlock. so when off sync, even with the correct 4 part code and rolling code it will not respond. you can set the bad plip allowance as well, so if one or more of the 3 parameters is incorrect it will log a bad plip record, when the number is reached, the alarm will sound.

I've written about how to get the factory alarm working on a farmer spec defender having done the job myself.

So unless your after market alarm has more advance immob and tracking features, it's better to use the 10AS to interface with the immob of the ECU.

Having said that, one of the connectors in your picture is for the transponder coil which will pulse the fob to make it submit a valid code when the engine is in passive immob and you wish to start the vehicle. without that, you will need to press the unlock button the fob or the horn will beep twice and the immob lamp will flash when you attempt to crank. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.

Sorry, I've only just noticed this reply! Thanks for the info Thumbs Up I don't know much about this sort of stuff so that's interesting. I didn't have a fob when I bought the DC. I had an aftermarket alarm fitted straight away so have never used the factory alarm set up on this one. So the connector that isn't connected to anything is for the factory immobiliser? Or am I reading that wrong?
