One will have been fitted with the dim dip system, the other has not. All standard land rover, that there are no definite rules to which ones had it fitted to.

Thanks andy.
I presme there is no easy way to disable the dim dip on the main beams, as this confuses the hid ballast and, although gives a nice disco flashing effect, i doubt it does them much good ![]() Cc |

Never heard of Defenders fitted with such dim dip. Are you sure that it is not a matter of bad earth here?

dim dipped lights were fitted to land rovers and many other cars in the uk , BUT were dropped after a while as the uk was prosecuted by eu commission for fitting them .
UK were only country to fit them QUOTE FROM NET In 1988, the European Commission successfully prosecuted the UK government in the European Court of Justice, arguing that the UK requirement for dim-dip was illegal under EC directives prohibiting member states from enacting vehicle lighting requirements not contained in pan-European EC directives. As a result, the UK requirement for dim-dip was quashed. good ole EU !!! |

Maybe I do not understand the term dim dip correctly, but is this the equivalent of todays DRLs? Meaning that when the contact is turned on or the engine is running, the high beam automatically comes on at reduced force?
If that is the correct understanding, then there should be no connection with side lights on or not. But maybe you talk about something totally different here. Eric You never actually own a Defender. Eric that's pretty much it, 1/2 brightness.
if you look behind the main dash, there may be a pink relay, that's the dim dip relay, it can be bypassed with a simple 3 wire harness, i did it to my 1995 90, I think the details are on LR4x4 forum |

the dipped beam part of main headlight came on at reduced brightness with sidelights
used a relay and resistor give lower output my 93 defender had it- but higher wattage bulbs burned resistor out so never worked anyway Last edited by munch90 on 30th Dec 2013 8:55am. Edited 1 time in total |

I see. So the UK were very proactive back in the 80's and 90's as to vehicle legislation.

what happens is that when the lights are in the sidelight position on the switch, the main beans come on at reduced power. thinking about it it seems sensible for additional visibility. and i wouldnt have thought twice if the other 90 didnt do it.
this is not an issue of earths, as in my experience one would see variations in light output and these are at a constant level. Anyway I will ditch the HID on this one and search out some better bulbs. CC |

Why don't you just bypass the dim dip function (the relay is located behind the instrument binnicle) I've had to do to 2 of my mates as the resistor had gone faulty and the headlights didnt work, do a search and I'm sure it will show you how

my 2007 90 [hardtop - commercial] had/has dim-dip standard... I was told, at the time of purchase, that ALL commercial Defenders had dim-dip while the station wagons had headlamp adjusters/motors

Interesting, never seen a Defender on the road in any continental Europe country with dim dip lights. Seems a UK specific function I guess.

Even simpler than that, just unplug the dim dip resistor
