While driving on highway other 90-100 kph, after a long upslope the engine would quit or limp for 4 to 10 seconds, with the coolant temperature indication going up to max then back to normal, during this period no throttle response.
As coolant temp indication come back to normal, throttle recover authority and away I go. I seem to be loosing small quantity of coolant throught boilover from coolant reception tank during those events. No engine light come on ever. Engine is tuned, but will do the same under original programmation or tuned ones. This as happened at least a 15 times during a trip from France to Greece, manageable on empty highways more worrysome in traffic! Any ideas? |

I have tried a second cap (not new) with the same result.
Cooling liquid is blown off around the coolant tank during those events. Need to get a new cap for test. There is no trace of water or coolant in the engine oil. Or any trace of engine oil in the cooling circuit or liquid. |

Just an idea, occasionally on a really hot day I see a number of hgv's parked up on a motorway hard shoulders on a very large hill,as the hgv's start to slow down on the hill they start to bunch up (tailgating),this then STOPS the airflow over the radiator which together with the high reving engine causes them to overheat rapidly. So you might want to check the radiator fins are clean,or stop tailgating on hills,

Were you in 6th gear at the time?

This is a common issue in hotter climates. The PUMA has a marginal cooling system at best. If the weather is hot then running it at maximum power will cause the ECU to go into self preservation mode and cut power. Few things to try
1 - Ensure the viscous fan is working - you should be hearing it roar when the engine is getting hot 2 - Consider using a lower gear - 5th instead of 6th - that keeps the revs up which if the viscous fan is working will increase cooling. 3 - Might be worth looking into a bigger or more efficient radiator 4 - Apparently a larger Intercooler will have a big effect on engine temperature, that might be worth trying. |

The defender was heavily loaded, moving boxes and furniture up to the roof on every occurences
6th gear? yes. I don't recall it happening in 5th but not 100% (it happened so many times). Viscous fan is working, intercooler is uprated as part of an Alive stage 2 preparation. As for temperatures, it would happen with ouside temps down to 15°C. In July, I experienced outside temps up to 48°C in South Morocco and it would work like a breeze (pun intended). I will see in the next couple of weeks if it occure again on light load. More efficient radiator?? |

check your fuel filter?
never had it on a defender, but days 'yot land cruiser looses power every so often, usually at 1-2yr intervals - fuel filter replacement always works. (land cruiser has fidgity ECU too...) Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |
