Will an LED have a better light output?
Not necessarily. Cheapest solution is to tell your wife to switch on the hazard lights as they give a much better spread of light then just the reverse light Depending on where you reverse you may well require good wide angle light pointing out at an angle to rear of the vehicle. Even better if they are mounted at roof level Consider one or two LED such as the 900 lumen vision X solstice lights at roof level and separately switched to the reverse light. OK such a system is not road legal in the UK, but they can also double up as a work/camp light and will be brighter with a better spread of light then a reverse light. Brendan |

I fitted a 16w cree LED lamp in my reversing lens.
The effect is like a mirror ball at a disco (not Disco). Brighter pinpoints of light but no overall increase in backwards illumination. Quite pretty though. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop Now a 2013 110 USW too. |

As Brendan already commented, LED reverse lights are not doing wonders either. My SVX came standard with LEDs, and when you look at the reverse lamp when it is on from the back of the truck, it seems extremely bright. But when at night you actually reverse the truck, it is surprising how poorly that LED lamp illuminates what is behind the truck. Using the hazards can indeed help, but I also find that using my LED rear fog lamp when reversing really helps a lot. For some reason the light output of my LED rear fog lamp seems much better than of the LED reverse light. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |
