AMR6104
Hi customer service guys........

AMR6104 is the current version of the Defender sidelight/dipped beam light switch. This part is well known to be of relatively poor quality, and fail regularly - to such a point that my local authorised repairer doesn't just stock one, but has 2 or 3 on the shelf, as well as the equivalent reference for earlier Defenders (that have an identical switch, but with a different connector).

The headlight circuit is a poor design with no relay - hence all the current flows through the switch. Then, the switch itself is also a poor design. What appears to be the main failure mode is that the current is sufficient to heat up, and melt the PTFE backing on which the contacts are attached - then the contacts are slowly pushed through the softened PTFE until they no longer make contact.

I am now on my second replacement of this switch in a 2007 Defender for exactly this reason. This is not the real reason for writing this, however annoying it might be to have to replace it twice in 6 years. What really got me when I bought the replacement was that the wire guage used is now thinner, and hence it will heat up more, and the white PTFE backing now also appears thinner. So, an already poor system (both circuit design and switch) has now become even worse.

Then the price - why is it €144, when the same part from Lucas (who claim to be the OEM) costs only about 20€? - does the difference in price mean that nobody buys the switch from you, so you haven't realised there is a problem with it?

What is going on Landrover? This is a problem that has existed since the very first 110s back in the 80s!

Jon

PS photo shamelessly taken from the german landypedia.de site, as the problem is so recurrent that they have a page on it.

Just do what everyone else does... make up a loom with a couple of relays in it, so this weak switch just turns on the relay, for either sidelights or dipped beam.

If you buy LED lights, they draw less current Wink
Or if you can't be arsed to make up your own loom you can buy them, e.g. here:

Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Thread resurrection - any chance of a response from JLR to the original post above?

Seriously, what kind of response do you expect, the Defender is history, they were not interested back in 2013 let alone now.

Read the script of the Monty Python dead parrot sketch and replace the word parrot with Defender Wink Steve.
