Half asleep after night time journey back from Heathrow . Returning an Enterprise car hire the next morning I put 40L of unleaded into an empty tank instead of diesel .oops ! And topped the rest off with diesel when I realised . I handed them the keys and said nothing . I didn't bother a toss though as 4 weeks before some little monkey at Enterprise Heathrow stole our iPad from the car .

I always thought you had to a daft to this - BUT,
Leaving Reading last Sat eve I stopped at the BP station as the fuel light had been on for 10 miles or so to stick half a tank in as we were going out for dinner later that night. Put just over £50 worth in - and then noticed I had used the unleaded pump - FECK Never done it before and can only put it down to not thinning what I was doing and using auto pilot to select the nozzle as I'd filled the bike up twice since the Defender. . Paid for the fuel, told the chap in the kiosk I wasn't moving it and phoned LR Assist. Got recovered home with the 110 which was then collected again on Monday morning and taken in to the dealer. Luckily I had realised before starting it so limited the problem to the tank. Dealer drained and removed the tank, cleaned everything and fitted new filter, gaskets etc. Not cheap but better than it could have been. From what I hear if they have been run the bill can run into thousands of pounds and end up an insurance job. Running fine now and they gave it a full valet free at the same time but the bank account isn't happy. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

Once recovered home, why didn't you just drain the tank and refill with diesel??

Two reasons - I don't have the space / equipment to do it and the tank / filter would still be contaminated which could lead to warranty issues.
This way it keeps the warranty intact in case of future problems. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

If you haven#t started the engine, the fuel pump won't have pulled any contam into the filter or pipework. If you drained the tank, any petroleum will evaporate quite quickly. So if you do have the misfortune to make this blunder, provided that you haven't started the engine then I think a home drain should be quite satisfactory.
However, it won't be easy to get rid of the contaminated fuel you've drained out, and if there's 16 gallons of it you're going to have quite a probelm on your hands. |
