not strictly a land rover but
One of my best friends and I have been looking at a trip to north Africa over land. Me and my wife in the defender with all the kit and him and his wife and son in his disco3 to even out the weight and fuel consumption a bit. However we then thought that while two cars can self recover and give an additional level of flexibility etc what about a big camper wagon? His first idea was a 101fc but that would be a bit small 5 up so next was a unimog with a double cab and camper body but I wonder that they are a lot of money for what they are. So what would you look at as an alternative to these options. Oh and I am limited to c1e on my licence. Also I know that there are roads in North Africa and a winebago would be more than happy but I don't think like that. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

I think you have the major alternative covered with a Unimog; but unless you really are took with an alternative vehicle type and so part of the trip is actually about taking that vehicle, then I'd stick with your first option.

Also, have you spent much time with these other people - 5 to 8 hours a day in a vehicle together is quite an undertaking.

Two vehicles gives you lots more flexibility.

Also since you already own the vehicles can save you on another capital investment. Buy a big vehicle, return to the UK and they are not so readily suitable for the school/shopping/pub run.

IF you are interested in a large overland vehicle get across to Allrad 2014 mid June time. However have very, very deep pockets.

Why would you want to take all the gear? Been to Morocco twice now. Both times in a D3, I carried all my own kit and the 110's carried their kit.
Fuel economy between the 110 and D3 was negligible. I would say stay in your own vehicles and carry your own kit 110 D250 SE HT

If we stop with our own cars then on a run in mine I get about 31mpg loaded and with mud tyres. matey is lucky to get low 20's partly because of its map and partly because of the drivers heavy foot, hence sharing the weight. It was his idea to get a big truck thing as he has more disposable income than me. As to spending 24 hours a day with 4 others for a month, yeah we'll see how that goes. One has to be optimistic. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Let me understand this.
You get decent economy fully loaded.
Your mate gets pants MPG because it's mapped and he drives it like he stole it.
He has more disposable income.

So he offloads all his weight to you so he can enjoy his big comfy D3 and you get to lumber behind as the support truck.

Not much of a mate in my eyes!!!! But each to their own.

I always use the mantra that I carry what I need. There were some items that the others carried that we all used, ie collapsible table, but then you can live without that. If I need things I carry them. 110 D250 SE HT

I was struggling to see the logic but then we don't know how the friendship works? I'd be certain that none of my mates would ask me to do the same and I wouldn't ask my mates to carry my kit.

Breaking it down to the most simplistic view, if he broke down, you'd have all his kit. Or if you broke down he is then tied to you because you're the stores barge. 110 D250 SE HT

NO. G4 was never my thing. I avoid it like the plague. I'm now a civvy working in a military environment. And we still have a G10. Trouble is the stores cost is over £3mil and there are in excess of 1000 items. And they are ALL serialised. So glad I'm not the storeman Rolling with laughter 110 D250 SE HT

I have never looked at it like that. The way I see it I have a lighter truck and less seats but a much bigger cargo capacity so why not give some of my spare room to my friend it's a little thing that will help him out. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Does a pickup 90 have a bigger cargo capacity than a Disco with 3 people in it, i.e. big split rear seat folded down or even totally removed?

Whilst the sentiment is laudable, I think your logic is flawed. Putting your friends' kit in his own Disco is unlikely to make a significant difference to his fuel consumption, particularly if travelling in convoy at 300tdi Defender speeds. Unless he's taking the proverbial kitchen sink, of course. Darren

I get the feeling that you think I'm being taken advantage of? I thought I was offering to do the right thing. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.
