I do like the look of that swing the adaptor bracket for the door looks to use alk the original mount holes and is of a nice thick sheet of metal. I have added it to my wish list I'll definately be getting in touch to find out if it fits with land rover rear light guards.

Apart from the Sonic carrier I found the Mantec useful my choices are limited though due to the NAS style rear step bumper the 50th offers a few other different challenges

OK biased warning, we sell the Safari Equip and Nakatanenga range of wheel carriers and have no personal experience of the Masai wheel carrier.
The Masai wheel carrier is made in Turkey and has a £10-15 price advantage over the UK made Safari Equip one. The Masai one seems to have a smaller reinforcing bracket/fillet between the two arms. The Masai one uses shorter fixing brackets then the Safari Equip one, and uses washers for reinforcing tub whereas the Safari one has a proper reinforcing bracket. The Masai uses three long bolts supplied loose, presumably the space saving redesign to go into a smaller box as the means of attaching the actual wheel. The Safari Equip uses a metal top hat with three standard welded wheel studs so that the rim is firmly bolted onto the carrier. I think this is a better and stronger design than the Masai This raises the question what thread sizes have Masai used on their stainless bolts. Standard fine wheel studs thread or? I do know a stainless bolt manufacturer has recommended NOT to use stainless fine thread bolts for this application. The Masai one has decent online fitting instructions whereas the Safari Equip website does not. However Land Rover Monthly does have a good online guide for fitting a Safari wheel carrier. Hope that is useful. Brendan |

I fitted one a couple of months ago. Really easy to fit, very good instructions, and well made. Also an improvement to rear vision as spare is offset. No experience of any other manufacturers, but Masai is worth the money.

Thanks folks, saved me trying to dig out some photos.
Will they work with light guards? Not possible to give a 100% definitive yes or no. Depends on actual tyre size and how far off the vehicle the light guards stand off. We run 255/85/16 which are 33" diameter and they do clear the lights no problem. Also am sure SE do a large tyre version. Am not sure exactly the difference between large tyre and standard version. Brendan
I had a 285 on mine and it cleared fine (not the one in the pictures) I don't think light guards would work though due to the bracket being very close to the lights as you can see in the pictures it nearly touches the top of the top light. It was a great wheel carrier though, I just wish I could fit another. Cheers Tom Defender puma dormobile camper |

I doubt that would fit with NAS sized lights.

it's a very tight fit, too close for individual light guards with NAS lamps:
You can't actually get a ring spanner or socket onto the nylok nut, has to be open ended from the rear & a socket undoes from the bolt at the top. Mark S CONVOY for HEROES www.facebook.com/convoy4heroes www.lothian4x4response.org ------ Td5 90 Thread in 'My Defender' Forum |
