My first defender!
After many years of Jap 4x4's, i am happy to announce my arrival on the defender 'team', done a few long trips in the company of LR's but managed to resist up until now.

Here is is! Very happy indeed, odd though arn't they, small and with bits digging in your leg, i suppose i'll get used to it Very Happy

I don't do extreme off road, most of my 4x4 work is towing my fishing boats off beaches and long camping holidays (already done Morrocco, Turkey that sort of thing) so i'll set it up more as an 'all roader' rather than an 'off roader'.

I picked a Defender this time 'cos i liked the look and it's small physical dimensions. Plus i factored in that if i like the Defender it could easily be a triggers broom car and last me for many years, the surfs and prado/landcruisers i've been used to just arn't worth rebuilding and i haven't got the room for a VX or Amazon.

Luckily it came with my favourite tyres fitted BFG a/t's great for sand & snow and reasonably quiet on the road.

Already I fancy a set of better shocks and springs and i'm interested in the steering damper fitted to the Twisted conversions, but i'd hope it dosn't reduce the steering lock even more!!!

Beyond that i'd like a QD (ish) full length roof rack, with a ladder (I always wanted a ladder Very Happy )

I am quite happy to let it evolve around me, i'm going to build and expedition trailer for it this winter, containing a kitchen hot and cold water shower and loo, combine this with an OzTent it will be a nice holiday rig with a few home comforts.

Looking forward to learning a new to me vehicle

Hello Shep,

Welcome to the Defender crowd. I love my Defender, because she is all about the essentials.

She is not a luxury vehicle and she is not the most comfortable vehicle. She is however beautiful, unique (as are all defenders), she gets the job done, and on top of it all, she will break down and I will be able to fix her.

If you are going to be pulling boats out of the water, I would suggest getting her protected either with Dinitrol (my first choice) or Waxoyl. She will last longer with this protection, as Land Rovers and water are not the best of friends out of the factory.

I use the word Land Rover in the previous sentence and not Defender because I just saw this video from the US version of Top Gear where they compare a Range Rover, Escalade and a Jeep. Undoubtedly, Land Rover makes the "best 4x4xfar" but I was smiling at the part where the Range is driving through the rain and water starts leaking throught the dome light.

Defender owners why pay more for a Range Rover when you can get Defender Smile

welcome to the forum & I'm soon to have my new defender Thumbs Up

They are probably one of the most versatile vehicles in the world as they can be all things to all men.

Some on the forum have vehicles that can go anywhere & within reason never get stuck and some on here have vehicles that make a range rover look Spartan but all are land rover defender owners & proud of it Very Happy

We all love them & hate them at different points of our ownership our expectations are dashed by build quality or are surprised how really good they are - you will go through it all

Why they have not moved the handbrake or changed the door pulls to give more room is a mystery to me.

Nothing on the defender needs to be standard everything can be changed, but at the same time actually nothing needs changing - go figure Exclamation 2020 P300 HSE

Yep that's the one, it was advertised in a few places, but it was a long drive for me so i ignored it, then it came up on the 'site' and i felt it was an omen!!

Doing beach work? First job wax owl chassis bulkhead doors etc. Preferably before it hits the beach!

Turning circle? Get lock stops adjusted so that tyre just rubs on radius arm. That will give you best turning circle with your wheels/tyres combination
