X Defend Column Without Shear Bolt
I'm thinking about fitting a X-Eng Column defender to the puma but not really good with the idea of the shear bolt. I was thinking of using a normal bolt with a security fitting.

Something like this....

Ok would make it slightly less secure than the shear bolt but would still take an age to remove (even with the right tools) due to Censored access but even if it took an hour would be less time than if I needed to remove the thing for genuine reasons.

Think you'd have problems getting the adaptor to fit on the head and tighten it securely unless you cut it down. There's not a lot of room. Hence the shearbolt principle for added security too. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

To be honest I think it would be still be an effective anti-theft deterrent. Villains don't like being slowed down, and are unlikely to be equipped to remove the lock if fitted in this way. Many will be too dim even to realise that you haven't used shear bolts.

Until such time as the scumbag community in general has worked out a way to neutralise the X-Defend quickly I think it would be almost as effective as shear bolts.

I too considered an alternative bolt but as stated accessability is the issue. On balance there are 'alternative' recessed grub screws available if you do a search that could be fitted in lieu but this is really a 'fit and forget' item surely? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I wouldn't know I've never had to change one. Never had a puncture either. You could potentially say that about anything security conscious you fit. You've as much chance perhaps of needing a lock change on a pedal lock perhaps? I suppose it's weighing up the 'chances?'

Life is full of 'What ifs!' My personal favourite is 'What could possibly go wrong?' It does too on occasion, go wrong that is! Rolling with laughter If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Upon reflection you are absolutely right and my comment above is misleading anyway - to change the ignition lock barrel the X-Defend wouldn't make any difference, since the X-Defend is attached to the part that gets changed.

The steering lock/ignition lock assembly is itself secured to the column by a clamp secured with two shearbolts which have to be removed, which is awkward and time consuming. Once out, the whole thing complete with X-Defend would come off. You may then be able to grind the X-Defend's shear bolt heads off and reuse the X-Defend, alternatively fitting a new one might be easier.

Either way, as you say it really is fit and forget - there's nothing at all to be gained by NOT using the shearbolts on the X-Defend.

(When my driver's door lock barrel was playing up I bought a new set of locks (on a 110 DC there are only 2 - the driver's door lock and the steering column lock), but after realising the aggro involed in changing the ign lock I opted to free off the driver's door isntead - much less effort)!

Cheers all, I've been busy looking for some security grub screws which look like they will do the job.

You're joking right? Takes about 30 seconds to get those bolts out!
