I'm looking for a bit of a project, but something that from the beginning will get me from A to B.
I've seen this one, and wondered if anyone had any thoughts? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201305236922478 According to the dealer its had a cross-member replacement, 'probably due to corrosion'. Should this worry me? I'd also considered Simmonites, but from a search on here I'm not seeing the love. Specifically, something like: http://simmonites.com/slide%20packs/military%2090/index.htm From there, I can add some bits as and when. |

I could live with the first one. It has a lot of nice additions which will not have added anything like their combined purchase price to the value of the vehicle. That said they are of secondary importance to overall condition so make sure you look past them.

I agree the first one looks ok but enjoy the chase, there's 100's of defenders out there for sale, some are projects some aren't. Have a good Think about what you plan to do with it, then go from there, there are a few gotchas like 300 tdi's and the LEZ
Whereabouts are you in the uk ? I'm sure there are fellow forum members happy to help you |

Hi Rick
First one looks OK. If you have not read already, rear cross members on TD5's are notorious for rusting away in front of your eyes When I got my 2001 TD5 last year I was going to have the cross member replaced. The Indie who was going to do the work suggested that the original was salvageable so they did that and the cost saved has gone into the galvanised chassis fund Being a 1999 that one will have a 10P... engine so make sure there are no head problems, the other Achilles heel of TD5's. The later 15P engines are better as they have a redesigned head but they can still have issues. Good luck with the search. Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

Fair points, one and all. I know there are plenty of 90s around, but there don't appear to be a wealth of them in the central belt of Scotland where I'm based. I see a lot in Yorkshire, Lancashire and quite a few in Somerset way. The Dales and that area are doable for a visit but Devon, Somerset, Wales, Surrey etc are a little far.
I'm needing to effectively px a Freelander 2 to free up some cash as I'm switching from a single dull car (that the Boss doesn't really like; she'll be keeping the Disco4), and going to a fun summer car (think small, two seats, occasional roof) and a 'reliable' winter vehicle such as a Defender (which the Boss learned to drive on and is something I can tinker with in the summer months). I love this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171102919619 But I'm not convinced on the price, it seems toppy, but I could be wrong. I see 6 offers from the same person all declined. Looking at the spec, I can see a couple of thousand on the Recaros, probably a couple of thousand on the Twisted tune, and another couple of thousand on the wheels, the lights, the stereo and the rest. So the question being whether the basic machine is worth £15k minus say £6k, so £9k? Owner is 19 and an enthusiast, which given the sum of the parts I don't really doubt. I'm just slightly wary of an eBay purchase with obviously no warranty. RickH |

I would steer weel clear of any vehicle second hand that has a sticker on it saying 'if in doubt, flat out' as he may as well have put a sticked on it saying 'thrashed to within an inch of its life'.
Personally I would say that does look over the top on price, classic example of not getting back what you put into a project on resale. He reckons there has been £30 - 40K spent! It's only worth what any other 2006 TD5 with 105,000 miles is worth, plus whatever you are prepared to pay for the mods - depends if you would do those mods yourself if you bought a basic Defender. |

There are plenty decent Landrovers for Sale in Scotland. Even more so if you venture 30 minutes north where every other person seems to have one.
Good luck with the search. |

Rick,
I'm also a newbie to the forum - but am extraordinarily old. You are looking at 'projects' already with a lot of bling. I took the opposite approach, last month bought an 05 TD5 truck cab with only 40k miles. No corrosion, no modifications. Good as new -I hope! I paid a good whack for an unmodified truck in perfect nick. I can project that how I like... windows or not, bling or not, engine tune or not .. ad infinitum. Maybe look at stuff out there that has not already been someone's 'project'? Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ... |

Fair point, but there are degrees of modification and also degrees of skill and degrees of financial fluidity. I'm after something this side of Xmas that will get me from The Sticks to work and back. I know that won't implicitly require any modifications, but I'm OK with a few. It gives me a steer on where I think the car could end up, if you know what I mean. I'll just see whats out there in my budget (after all, like the Twisted grey one I posted earlier, there's always something out there outside my budget). |
