Mystery creeking / banging noise ? Help
Heavy duty and noisy creeking / banging coming from drivers bulkhead / floor / steering area . Ever since i pulled a BMW out of the ditch last snowfall . I was giving big hard yanks from the drivers side chassis point . It sounds structural , and comes from floor area so bulkead - chassis or steering area - chassis ? Now its so bad at 60 mph the whole front end has a severe wobble right through to the steering and my legs . What the hek could this be ? Its driving me insane . I cant find a single loose part . Every turn and bump its horendous . Any ideas ?

you don't say the circumstances when it occurs, but possibly sounds like the preload on the swivels isn't set high enough - hence the bad wobble. Not sure about the banging though. Possibly worn panhard rod bushes too - possible so worn giving you a noise??

You aren't really that specific for a proper diagnosis.

Big hard yanks? Enough to make it jump around? Have you checked to see if the front springs are seated correctly? Failing that, you've pulled something out of alignment. Not sure what you mean by 'chassis point' but the standard towing eye isn't designed for hardcore recovery abuse. Darren

Thanks for replys yep something is definetly out of shape but i have checked the springs . The steering relay and unit are bolted directly to the chassis and in the place of all the probs and noises . Also how and where is rhe bulkhead mounted to chassis at the drivers footwell side ? Its permanently like this on every turn of rhe wheel and corner and bump . You know the noise a wooden ship would make on a rolling high sea ? Then thats it . Structural .

The bulkhead is bolted to the chassis below the front door pillar behind the sill.

The hockey stick is the term used for the front radius arm because it's shaped kinda like a hockey stick where it is bolted to the front axle.

sorry how old is your tuck?

could you have damaged the chassis / crack somewhere (hopefully not - especially if its relatively new)

I hope its nothing too serious but from what you've said I'd with with chassis and work back from that ie everything that bolts to it.

good luck.

Ok the 110 is 2012 2.2 110 . JR your explanation is spot on buddy and sounds exactly right to my area of probs . I know i was tugging hard but find hard to immagine the chassis with a crack in it . NEVER again helpin a spotty teenager in a BMW . Cheers boys for your help , i will keep you posted as to the outcome .

Ok both Ibexman and JR Bow down You both were right on the money with your diagnosis of my probs . 25yrs been drivin LR's and never heard of a hocky stick . So again to the dealer loaded with the forum info on the worn bushes .Guess what ? They tell me that LR has a modified bush for the arm . Its the 2 biguns on the chassis side and both left and right will be done . So my vague post about wooden ships was correctly diagnosed . Thumbs Up A perfect example of the knowledge , skill and anorakness that the forum gives us . Thanks to all .

Aaarragh ! Premature excitement Big Cry so the stealer changed the hockey stick bushes this morn and I drove away to exactly the same noise and probs . So disappointed . To my mind it is coming from the steering relay , major creaking and banging , wayward steering and huge wobble at 50 - 60 , I'm totally befuddled ?

That is a bit worrying, seeing that Landrovers haven't had steering relays since leaf spring days!

Sorry you still have your noise, though.

With a big smile on my face yes you are right . Takes me back 15 yrs as i remember Trying to get a steering relay out of my 1966 S2a , with a great big hammer and a blow torch it took about an hour of heat and destruction for it to move . Ahhhhhhhh Bow down how the memories come flooding back . Thanks for reminding me of that fact .

I had a similar prob with previous Def when I was recovered from a rather large mud hole. I had a noise and a death wobble at speed - eventually traced it to the fact the panhard rod weld had sheared - worth a quick look just in case. Sweatysock
