More Idle Issues
Evening Gents,

idle issues are back again... Every time the engine is warmed up, at idle it develops this horrible bag o' spanners sound, the car starts shaking and the rev counter bounces up and down.

Now I had this back in winter, and it turned out to be a disintegrated fuel pressure relief valve that was lodged in the fuel rail and had broken an injector. Back then I was getting white smoke pouring out on start up which I don't seem to get now. I do, however, get black smoke if I accelerate hard, or if I'm holding steady around 70mph.

The funny thing is, the engine idles fine if I keep the clutch depressed... And as soon as I release it I see the revs dip ever so slightly, then go back up to normal, then dip etc. etc. and the whole thing develops into a cacophony of unpleasantness.

Now to me that sounds like a mixture problem, and possibly something along the lines of the engine not compensating for the tiny amount of added stress of spinning the gearbox in neutral (if there even is any) or something like that... Or, that old favourite, the EGR valve (yes, the chukka chukka still happens).

MPG doesn't seem to have gotten noticeably worse, by the way.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
