upgrade to thatcham cat 1
hi,

anyone know what an upgrade to a cat 1 entails and what sort of money it is.
also is this something you could do as a diy project?

would it be naive to think there's no need for a tracker once upgraded?

thanks

This was discussed recently. Upgrading to a Cat 1 spec isn't difficult (the exact requirements are on the Thatcham website) but you won't get it recognised as Cat 1 for insurance purposes unless it's actually been tested by Thatcham, which isn't really viable for individuals.

Yes, you would be naive to think that a tracker wouldn't be needed if you had a Cat 1 system. They do completely different things and just because an alarm is Cat 1 doesn't mean the vehicle can't be stolen. Darren

Speak to Tim at mobilecentre I'm sure he does an upgrade!
I do have a tracker and I think it's a good idea to have tracker at least if it does go there's a greater chance of getting it back!

thanks for the replies - I did a quick search and couldn't find it discussed before?

seen the mobile centre website advertising (don't recall seeing the cost last time but them my memory isn't the best).

does mention keeping the original fob which suits me but doesn't really mention anything more. I'd be keen to know what the upgrade includes and whether you can do a diy install. I appreciate it may not be recognised but if there's a substantial saving for doing it yourself I might not be too bothered about it being recognised (so long as it still does the job).

thanks.

I've fitted that kit supplied by Mobile Centre in the FCX130.

I wouldn't describe it as DIY and you won't be able to get it certified if you install yourself.

A chat with Tim will give you all the options and prices

It would have to be a 'viable' vehicle for theft namely be able to get a few miles before major problems occur. Stick a notice up "This vehicle belongs to Caterham!" You'll undoubtedly be safer from theft than anyone else's truck on here!

k9f - 6 months ago it might have been a blessing but I'm not starting to fear that after so much time, effort and frustration I'm gonna get the tyres sorted and then somone's gonna lift it. Sad

Caterham - if you have the battery back-up alarm, then you have an alarm and immobiliser up to Thatcham CAT 1 standard ( but without the Thatcham certification). Since the battery backup alarm became standard, LR just haven't bothered to get it certified. So all you'd be paying for in upgrading is the certification. May be useful if required for insurance purposes.

thanks kmac

hmm.

not wanting to poo poo anyone but I don't have the battery back up alarm.

does that suggest the c500 I've seen quoted to upgrade mine to a thatcham 1 is simply to replace the siren for a battery back up version - seems like alot of dosh?

(but them I'm tight) Laughing

The battery back-up is an add-on, plug-in unit to the standard alarm and can be bought for around 70 IIRC. Darren

No idea what the add on includes but I doubt it would be just a battery back up sounder for that kind of money

You can get the LR battery back up sounder for around 90 but its about 120 to get the replacement loom to wire it in (unless you do a diy job on the wiring)
