Defender TD5 1998 interior heater
Hi all

Just thinking about driving my truck in winter for the first time.....it doesn't seem to shove out much heat in the cab, is there a known reason for that? Temp gauge reads normal all the time so I guess about 85/87 degrees, but nothing like that in the cab, the fan works (both speeds) just not much heat, I thought the point of having a landy was winter fun Laughing

Check that the blend cables are adjusted properly, so when you select "hot" the lever on the heter actually moves all the way to the hot position.

Insulate it with camping mats from tesco, and seal off the cab from the bulkhead back I wrapped insulating foil around the dog guard which is the best way to keep the heat in.As above, make sure the heater cables are in good condition, can still take a few miles before you feel any heat blowing through.

Most common problem is the control cables being out of adjustment or just plain siezed.
Confirm the cables are working ok (i.e. the outer is clamped into position and not moving with the inner) and then make sure that when the lever is at the top (or bottom) of travel that the flap is also in the correct position, more often than not the flap is not sealing correctly.

Not a difficult thing to resolve and with any luck you should have a very safisfactory heater for nil-cost in under 15-minutes. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

OK hot and cold cable was loose at the box side, does the vent lever in the cab operate the bracket on the side of the box in the engine? That doesnt seem to move, although i can't tell what is or isn't moving on my own Rolling with laughter 2008 TDCi 2.4 XS CSW

I used to remove the in/out pipes on box and flush thru with water....then, like the rest say, check for cable slack. Putting Dreams on Drives at JLR Solihull..

No, the one on the "side" of the heater box, is controlled by the fan lever (off/1/2), when you push the lever up all the way to the up position, it moves that lever on the heater and shuts off a large flap on the back of the heater box (where it bolts up to the bulkhead)

The hot/cold lever connects to the top of the heater, and the screen/feet lever vaguely connects to some flaps in the bulkhead that feeds the air up or down.

Ah ok, thanks Jamie....that probably means I have it all working now I think, just need to check the screen/feet lever behaves as it should.

OK Heat deffo works now on the way to work Wink

And the 2 speed fan.....

But all the air seems to come out of the window vents rather than anywhere else, so the direction lever is not doing its stuff

OK...how easy is it to fix the baffle that directs heat to either the windscreen or the cab floor, the lever doesn't seem to move anything, and the air is always on the windscreen, i'm baffled ..... Rolling with laughter 2008 TDCi 2.4 XS CSW

From memory, the flap that directs air either up or down is an integral part of the lower dash. The whole of the lower dash is essentially a large plenum chamber.

It's not a complicated mechanism, but you've got to strip out a significant portion of the dash to get to it.

Oh, and if you do get that far, then a worthwhile mod is to introduce a restriction into the passenger side demister vent. Because it's nearer to the fan then the bulk of the air goes straight up through it, leaving less to reach the drivers side. By restricting the passenger side to about half its' cross-sectional area, the air flow is much better balanced and the drivers side demister works better. Darren

Interestin, you could just as easily remove the vent trim on top of the dash and modify (gaffer tape Whistle ) the hole, tbh, I hadn't noticed a difference but will look for it now, cheers!

Yeah, I guess so. I first did this mod on a Series III many years ago, which comprised a metal disc on a shaft that I fitted in the bottom of the vent. It was then adjustable from the outside. In practice, a bit over-engineered, as once it was set at half way it was never necessary to move it again. Darren
