Rumbling sound on gearchange
I was wondering if anyone else out there had experienced the following?

I am becoming increasingly aware of gear rumbling from my gearbox when changing gear

As soon as I engage the clutch the gears make a quiet clattering rumbling sound.

Indeed I noticed today while cruising up to some lights that when I put the box in neutral the gears are rumbling slightly until the vehicle comes to a halt.

Down changing to the infamous 2nd also causes a loud grating sound.

This R380 box was fitted under warranty by the dealer 18 months ago and has only done about 15k as the original was starting to block the gate when chenging especially into reverse but also third.

Before you ask, no I do NOT drive with my hand on the gear lever, and I do not thrash the motor. It spends most of its time cruising along between 50 and 60 mph.

I must confess that I am worried that it could be a bearing between the output shaft and input shaft collapsing like I had years ago in a Series 2.

The next question is, would it be coverred still under extended warranty as the 110 is now 7 years old. He who dies with the most toys wins Smile

Hard to tell what you mean by 'rumbling'.

Take a video and post to YouTube, easier for us to hear what you mean Thumbs Up --

I would do a gear and xfer box oil drain and refill with fresh quality oil.
My gearbox seemed rattly /noisy when I got my Defender (with a light ~17kmiles) and a refresh of the oils has noticeably quietened it down, and improved the shift.
I used full sythentic oils in mine and I wouldn't wait for the LR specced drain intervals for these as they seem far too long. 2023 110 P400e

Would you like me to ask Phil to phone you about it? He's on his own today so slightly manic but I'm sure if I ask him nicely he'll give you a buzz!

Should be new oil in the t/b as that was only recently stripped down by the dealer with my mysterious difflock problem.

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17503.html

I have had it suggested today that it could be endfloat on the output shaft if the shaft was not preloaded properly in the t/b on reassembly.

I recall they were pigs to do when I tried swapping my old Range Rover LT77 and fairy o/d, I gave up and left the O/D off.

Given that it is still under extended warranty and I hate changing gearbox oils (hmm must do the series soon) I will leave that to the M/D He who dies with the most toys wins Smile

Thought I would keep you all updated.

LR Warranty have agreen to replace the box a second time Very Happy

What kind of mileage does everyone else expect out of an R380?

Some folk have said they had nothing but problems. Currently my 110 seems to eat a box every 15K.

And I doubt its my driving as I tend to use anti stall to pull off, dont rag the engine, cruise at 60mph and never rest my hand on the gear lever.

When its in 5th its fine, and hauled the caraven 800+ miles last week as well as a 400mile round trip before that to haul a discovery home on a trailer. He who dies with the most toys wins Smile

An R380 should be good for well over 250k miles if looked after, and probably twice that. Mine's approaching 210k and is better now than new. It'll never be a great gearbox, but it is long-lived.

Is LR fitting brand new, or remanufactured, units? If the latter that may be the problem, at least if my steering box experiences are anything to go by.

Just another update,

Fecking poxy cruddy Land Rover Ltd.

Over two months now the replacement box has been on back order. I have been informed by the dealer that there is no end in sight as apparently the company that reconditioned R380s has gone under and LR are trying to find a new supplier. FOR THEIR OWN POXY GEARBOXES, yes I know its an R380 but all the same Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Grrr,, arse feck bollix poxy dealers.

Could have saved £500 on extended warranty renewal and had a PROPER job done by a PROPER mechanic. He who dies with the most toys wins Smile

Could you approach Ashcrofts and see if an arrangement can be struck with LR? Darren
