Bear, what you are thinking of is the A/C fan that is mounted to the front? Comes on to cool the A/C condenser rather than the radiator.
There are advantages to an electric fan- like being off during warm-up in the winter, also (more relevant in the days of V you also didn't spray the engine bay during water crossings. For me, the viscous fan is more than enough and pulling back 34mpg on my last tank I can't complain about it draining the power either. Glyn |

That's the one glyn you learn something new every day!
I also think the viscous is right for the job, the kenlowe stand at billing was trying to convince me that it would pay for itself in the long run! Thought I would see what the forum thinks Looks like a no 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 2010 110 XS Utility 2.4TDCI 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 (gone) 2007 Discovery HSE TDV6 (gone) 1993 110 csw 200 tdi (gone) 1994 90 HT 300 tdi (gone) 1994 discovery 300tdi (gone) 90 hybrid 3.5 v8 (gone) Range rover bobtail 3.5 v8 (gone) |

From a technical/ analytical point of view yes it will save you money, but turning your A/C off would too, and servicing your brakes every 1000miles, checking your tire pressures every day, cleaning/ polishing it every day, reducing the weight (only essential items inside and carrying just enough fuel- remember to go to the toilet before a journey).
I guess what I am saying is it comes down to how far you are willing to go to get that extra .1mpg more. I think it is maybe something to think about if your viscous unit breaks. I still remember friends in Wales removing the viscous units from their trucks altogether as it never got hot enough to need them. Glyn |
