Not much help but mine does this also! 3rd gear seems terrible some times, spluttering and un responsive, flat spots everywhere. I thought it was all defenders that did this, my TD5 did this also !!! No fault codes or limp mode either.
I hope someone has a miracle cure ! , |

Have you tried unplugging the MAF sensor and driving it my Td5 would sometimes be unresponsive especially when cold if i unplugged the MAF it was like a different car.
Purchased a new MAF from BAS (very quick delivery) and problem solved.Got to be worth a try as it costs nothing. 2005 Td5 90 XS Steve |

are there particular times it does it? I have noticed slight 'missing a beat' at certain revs/speed/gear.

Well I first noticed it whilst blasting along the M621 into Leeds the other week, pushing 80+ mph - is the engine governed at top speed? Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Yes restricted to 84mph. Think that could be your answer.

Top speed on the 2.4 is governed to 82mph, unless of course it has been remapped and the speed limiter set to another speed or disabled .. When you reach that speed you loose all power and only get it back when the speed drops back. LANDYWATCH

If it is unmapped and feels like a 'pulsing' it is the limiter. If mapped (as mine was and still is) mine was down to overboosting it felt almost like a momentary fuel starvation and then it would pick up again. Cured with the latest BAS map thankfully. hello,
do not know if I am talking of the same ... one week ago , going to refill from home to the station, about 10km, I was afraid to be without fuel because, some "noticable drop off in power, only very brief, but noticible all the same " ... this on gentle throttle ... finally, at the station, I did not refuel so much, so it was not a problem of lack of fuel. I did notice it after Phil current : defender 110 sw 2.2 puma 2012 and 230.000km today and again my Range Rover VM2.5 engine from 1992 and 528.000km today.
