Defender Payload doesn't meet any current or future payload requirement, so you won't be seeing any new ones being purchased by MOD. Panther and Jackall will take over for light recon and operational awareness roles, with CVRT undergoing further work for desert use and further development of APCs alongside this.
Defender has been out of procurement spec for a few years now. 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits |

How come we recently saw a good batch of brand new Defenders being prepared for delivery? I would've thought a Defender would still have a valuable role as a general purpose "mucking around" vehicle — really the role it should always have had. Cheaper and lighter than the alternatives. |

I dont think so see below oh and as Setok mentioned its still got a roll as a 4x4 general purpose vehicle. There were about 6 military 110 sw going through PDI at Likes a few weeks ago. Land Rover have had a busy year on the Defender. So far this year Defender has been a hive of PDL activity to attempt to find niche products and generate revenue.–Fuel Burning Heater, Military 4.5 Tonne and TPMS/Reversing Camera. The L316 Military 24v Project places Defender back into the Military Market Place 12 / 24V electrical system delivering up to 280A output Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) to military standards; Def Stan 59-411 Class A and Mil Stan 461E Military black out lighting capability Hand control for raised engine idle NATO inter-vehicle starter socket and ECM / Bowman interface IR Lights and 12/24v power sockets Base military features (e.g. stowage solutions and map lamp) So far this year the Project has been through 2 VP builds. Latterly we have just completed a 2 vehicle VP2 build in Block 36 which was supported by AME and Product Coaches. This event raised a further 141 Aims. The AME team currently own 1 open AIM and 1 pended AIM, to date the project has pended and closed a total of 423 AIMS. As an organisation AME are good to proceed to TT with focus over the remaining weeks on GSPAS process completion and delivery of track facilities. The programme enters a 5 vehicle TT phase starting 06 July in BIW and 13 July in T&F. |

MOD UK and others are definately taking delivery of them - there are a load of them built and i keep passing lorries of the things going out.
after 2013 it will depend on how they stop production (eg total stop or continue to make CKD versions or the current version on export build spec only) Mike |

I'm going to have to shoot my source in the MOD then
He was telling me only last weekend that the only ongoing use is out of theatre, but then he's a tank boy and has a bias towards stuff that doesn't have wheels. Tsk, you take one bit of info as gospel and before you know it...... 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits |

He is right- There is no use for the Land Rover in thetre any more. Soft skin vehicles will never leave the camp so quads and old Land Rovers are used there (no point putting a £30,000 vehicle withing rocket range). As above looks like we are getting fully kitted out. And don't forget the Wolf fleet has lasted over 10 years and is still going strong. Glyn P.S. Just leaving Jordan and their Army uses thousands of thm, and love them too. |

Pumas on the army fleet thats going to end in tears does a squady know how to erase faults with a navcom unit ?? Where is the nearest dealer for warrenty work ?? Or do they phone up Land Rover Assist and wait for the nice man in the Discovery 4 to turn up nice posh AA man under fire doubt he signed up for that. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Was also said when the 300tdi and the td5 came out. I dont think its really an issue Ive said it before on here - how many of you have actually be stranded at the side of the road with a failed defender. At the end of the day, most defender problems are just minor niggles that actually dont stop the vehicle doing what it needs to do This coming from a person who saw the light and sold it Mike |

Mines had to return to Matfords 3 times on the back of an AA waggon, not for niggles as you say, 2 turbo siezzures and 1 engine blown up.
