SWB 4x4s as Defender alternatives
All new Jeep Wranglers are now automatic, & manual CJs are rare. Questionable durability as they are becoming more gadgety.

How do SWB Shoguns (Pinins) compare?

All others seem soft roaders or AWD saloons on raised suspension. What would your first non-Defender (or predecessor) for a SWB 4x4? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

I had one for two weeks as a hire car on a trip to the US......

I hated it at first but after a while i quite liked it.....then when i got home i realised that i did actually hate it!
The defender put a smile on my face everyday......the Wrangler just, well was just a car! The fear of death is the most unjustified of all fears, for there's no risk of accident for someone who's dead.

When my daughter was looking for swb 4x4, she fancied a shogun as it was more 'car' than a Landy, she changed her mind v quickly when sh found out the insurance was over 2 grand for a shogun as opposed to 550 for a 90. She ended up with a td5 90 hard top and loves it.

My old company van was a shogun SWB 4work, from 2007 until the engine went bang in 2011 (timing chain snapped and wrecked the engined.... Mits UK weren't interested at all, eventhough it was only just outside the warranty period as i'd not had it dealer serviced every time)

Driving was lovely, much comfier than a defender 90. quieter too (although not sure about a puma). towed well. did everything quite nicely.

Off road not as good as a defender... had naff axle movement........

...... and being a base model didn't have ETC (although being the 4work and aimed squarely at farmers/builders, you'd have thought they would fit it? but no)

In just rear wheel drive, it's fun in the wet, but you can run 4wd on the tarmac with center diff open, just as a defender, and it grips well.

Would I have another? if i didn't have the worry of the engine going pop, then yes, as it was a nice motorway mile eater.
