V8 in a TDCI
I am sure this will cause some discussion and a variety of views. And will certainly get a lot of attention from the title! So here goes.... Three years ago I bought an 08 tdci 90 Defender. I was brought up with Land Rovers and having a mid life crisis decided I wanted a V8 . I looked all-over the country at all sorts of varying condition V8's.I would have loved a 50th Anniversary but could not afford a nice one with not too many miles on it, as this was to be my only vehicle. Anyway did the maths again, MPG ,LPG etc and realised that it was still an expensive option. So paid more than I planned to, and got a very nice Puma. So three years down the road and its still going OK. Although my girlfriend says I like it and look after it more than I do her !!! So I have had a wandering eye towards a v8 again, long story, so test drove one in a local garage last week! They just sound awesome! So not wanting to spend the rest of my life rebuilding a rusty old V8 conversion and chasing the corrosion issues like I have already started to do with my 2008 puma! So how about a V8 in a TDCI ???..............Discuss! I am sure a lot of people will have strong views on this but its that sound! I don't even think a diesel V6 or V8 can beat the sound of a petrol V8 ! I am sure it would not be cheap. But a modern Landy V8 with a 6 speed etc etc. Just an idea, probably cost a fortune!

Aside from the dash and the six speed gearbox a TDCi is no different to an earlier Defender.

Several of us have converted earlier Defenders to V8 and in my opinion they are nicer coupled to an auto box anyway so can't really see the point in converting a TDCi Confused

I was thinking that too. Whilst it would be fun to have a newer V8 Defender, there isn't anything particularly controversial about it as the engineering required hasn't changed for years. Darren

Would be a nice conversion....

But I'd go for nice modern V8 though, not an outdated Rover V8 or some outdated American lump.

The hardest challenge will getting the Rev counter working as need a CAN input... not that hard to do though (and I see a certain company with a very expensive V8 build hasn't managed it lol). Or you could down the bodge method of changing the dials.

TDCi Pumas have nicer clutches, relatively, to earlier Defenders. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

AJV8, zf auto, job done!

And don't as Ian says spend time (and money!) getting the dials to work, the last Puma I saw (have photos somewhere) with an AJV8 in it had a mix of dials in it. Didn't really suit it.

Nice idea...

BUT

As the owner of a 50th Anniversary model, although it sounds great and is far smoother than a diesel Defender I doubt it's much quicker so if you're going to do it make sure it has surplus power/torque otherwise you may be disappointed.

Some of the Puma ones certainly rattle a lot nicer than the earlier Defenders Laughing Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.

A V8 in a Defender?...Awesome.....because "there is no substitute for cubic inches", or as they say today,"there is no replacement for displacement".....and of course, there is NOTHING like the sound of a good V8, working hard, with a good exhaust system.
A member has mentioned "LS"...yes the "LS" series of GM V8s are brilliant...the one to go for would be the 6.2L, 325KW, LS3.
So, if ya've got the dollars, then go for it, but.......it ain't gonna be cheap.......perhaps you ought to spend a bit of time looking for one with the job already done, and all the issues "sorted"...it would be a lot cheaper.
