I vary from cruising with the 7.5 tonners, to with the BMWs and Audis. I am happiest to stick to a happy 70mph with my Overdrive engaged.

I find it likes to cruise at 70 to 75 mph, it will do more but noise and fuel consumption take a bashing at anything above Thumbs Up

Do you all have overdrive or 6 gears? I find about 50-60 seems good for me in a 5 gear 1998 doing about 2500-3000 rpm 2008 TDCi 2.4 XS CSW

Just the 5 gears for me but I do have a discovery transfer box which probably explains the difference

Tbh it was already fitted when I bought the car but it is not difficult to do.

In the last month I have ( on my drive) changed the gearbox and transfer box and refitted a new gearbox with old transfer box, fitted new flywheel and clutch.

So if you could do it yourself it would just be cost of the transfer box.

As I said not sure how much revs drop as I have no experience of the defender transfer box sorry

Ps I too a few pics that I posted in another thread, I'll put the link up in a few mins Thumbs Up

You will find a few of the pics in this thread

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic21153.html

If fitting just the transfer box you could do it all with a trolley jack Thumbs Up

60-65 for me with an odd spurt to 70-75 if need to overtake more quickly. Anymore and she does protest. On our recent trip to see BSB at knockhill averaged 32mgp Thumbs Up

A friend changed the ratios on his 110, and at 70+ the noise dropped from 'what did you say?' to 'This Defender has a radio!'... but his 110 has no sound proofing which may be a difference Rolling Eyes
IMO it just sounded like less stress was put on the engine, especially as his mainly does motoway driving.

Ashcroft do the conversion kit: http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/in...oductId=44
and a walk through if you scroll down Thumbs Up

EDIT: I see Def2 User 'Sphere' has just done the conversion, so may be worth a PM Thumbs Up

Amondeggs .....no way could I do that these days, no equipment , no time and I'm 52 Smile

My first ever big job was stripping my vauxhall viva 1800 engine down and rebuilding from scratch.....but I couldn't do it now......

By the way.....those pics look like you have the same colour defender as me......metallic woodcote green 1998 ? 2008 TDCi 2.4 XS CSW
