my wife needs a bigger car and i'm contemplating a disco 3 on the list but i need advise on the following-
- is it upto and including early 06 models that are the lower ved band? - is it only the base model, and upto what year, did coil suspension occur? - if the vehicle has privicy glass - is this a removable film or a fully glass tint? - is there anything else i should lookout for when viewing vehicles roughly looking for a blue or green discovery with preferably less that 60k miles on it with approx £13k budget. air con/ climate contol wanted; heated seat also prefered cheers in advance |

Almost spot on, base model is 5 seat and has no air suspension or Terrain Response. Rare vehicle.
Next up is 7 seat that has Terrain Response and EAS Then is S (then SE, HSE) |

Should i avoid the S model then? - just thought that there would be less maintenance issues - never realised it was a rare vehicle (is it both 5 and 7 seat with coils or just 5 seat - sorry )
cheers for responses Last edited by farmer giles on 26th Jun 2013 3:05pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Worth asking around on disco3 but as many if us have a foot in both camps, here goes......
Pre March 2006 for lower VED. Don't pay over the odds for a 55/06 just to save £200/year though - there are some bargains to be had with 56/07 plates. Base 5 is the only coiler and as mentioned it also lacks Terrain Response (but still has low range). Very rare and very basic, these fetch a premium for some reason. Privacy glass from factory is tinted glass rather than a film At around 60,000 you will start to see suspension bushes failing. Common to replace wishbones, arb bushes and track-rod ends between 60_75k so perhaps better to look for slightly higher miles where these have been done? Front wheel bearings also take a kicking and need replacing around this mileage. EGR valves can be easily blanked pre 07MY but can't presently be blanked on later models. BAS is working on a solution to this Starting to see increasing number of engine failures on 07-08 models where the crankshaft shells rotate in the head, starving the engine of oil and leading to usual misery. Until recently it wasn't possible to rebuild the engine, you had to buy a short engine from LR at many thousands, however a couple of companies have started to list or are bringing to market all the parts needed to do a sensible rebuild. Most dashboard Christmas trees are due to failed brake bulbs , brake switches or suspension height sensor wiring corroding. Any decent Indy will diagnose in minutes and fix in minutes, but some dealers can take weeks to find stuff that the regulars on Disco3 can tell you in no time at all. If you want heated seats, you're looking at 55-56 plate SE (had winter pack as standard) or any HSE. Earlier S spec also had this I believe. I've had 2 SE spec cars, the plates from new is now on 110,000 miles. Suffice to say I'm happy enough wth it that I still haven't pulled the trigger on a new D4 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits Last edited by NoDo$h on 26th Jun 2013 3:57pm. I like that!
One that always sticks in my mind was a Disco 3 HSE on a 55 plate I sold new (was quite a good reg number, ending in LZE) in Bonatti with Ebony and every possible dealer fit option. Took it back in p/x a couple of years later and sold it again. Great vehicle! |

Go for the Best spec and mileage you can afford. I've not long sold mine, a February build that dipped just under the low VED bracket. I got 15k for mine about 2 months ago, but it did only have 47k , I don't use them much.
Walk away if they are old and no belt service has been done, even '57 plate D3's are due soon so budget accordingly. There's plenty out there, so be fussy. |

I had a tonga green SE which had pretty much everything the HSE had except the double sunroof (didn't want that anyway so no loss there) or the 4x4 screen showing wheel direction etc, that was added by wiggs from the D3 forum along with a couple of other 'tweaks', so basically ended up with an hse spec with no sunroof.
Great car, and should really have kept it as I subsequently bought a tin tent which it was ideal for, but selling that enabled the purchase of the 100 so I'm happy. I got 16.5k trade in 18 months ago (again around 47k on the clock). Nothing went wrong and I quite liked it. The built in sat nav was a bit duff I thought, particularly the look of it. Watch out for the expensive 'we have to replace all your brake pipes as its on the service schedule sir' that cost a big chunk of cash , they were in perfect nick, just because it had reached a certain age (it was an 05 plate) There are probably a few other things like that to watch out for, have a look on the d3 forum as (like here) there is a whole load of knowledge on there - even stuff you don't need to know along with some wizard electrical changes, suspension height changes etc. As said before get the best you can, I think I got a good price when I bought it as green wasn't very popular in the area I bought it (Ascot) Good luck.
