The instrument cluster ECU and the engine ECU are in constant communication. The biggest wonder to me is that it ran at all without the instrument cluster connected!
It is actually probably not a good idea to run in this way for a whole range of reasons. I don't know what problems it will actually cause on a Defender, but on something like a Disco 2 you'd run the risk of the two odometer recorders getting out of step which will, I think, disable the vehicle until reset. |

You and me both, I didn't expect it to even start. I only drove about 2kms. When I put the cluster back in obviously the tripmeter had reset, which I expected, but when I switched to start the engine I had a the words 'oil service' show up in the window where the odometer/tripmeter are for about 3 seconds and then go to the normal odo/trip screen. It only did this for about 3 or 4 on/offs then disappeared. I forgot to put that in the original post.

Interesting and wierd!
Remember that the Ipack on the Puma Defender was lifted from Disco 3 and consequently is has many, many features which are not used on the Defender. |

Excuse my ignorance, what is the Ipack?
I'm guessing, but probably way off track, Instrument package maybe, I have seen the same cluster in the Freelander. |

Ipack is the catchy modern buzzword lingo for the Instrument Pack (although I think LR spell it IPAC).
