Crankshaft Position Sensor - Heatshield needed Yes or No?

So the little heat shield over the CKP sensor on my truck is very loose and rattles annoyingly at certain RPMs.

Whilst trying to position/clamp it better the bloody thing came apart so I had to take it off.

Repaired it with some washers and small bolts I had lying around, but now it is a real pain to get it back into position.

According to the service manual you just "squeeze" the sides when taking it out or putting it back in. In reality it's not that easy.

Since I removed the cat from the car, do I really need to put the annoying rattling thing back in position?

Would safe me at least 30 - 40 minutes of frustration and sort out one of the rattles .

Anyone have an idea?

Since no one seems to know, figured better safe then sorry and clipped the shield back on.

It went on a bit better than I had expected (only took 3 tries) but had even more play than before.

Amazingly enough the annoying rattle is gone! Go figure.
