Puma rear step
It had to happen sooner rather than later. The Mrs. plonked the rear step from the Puma into my lap. She was reversing, took her eye off the mirror to check on the safety of a kitten and hit a low wall. The underneath of the cross member is not very solid and there are no big spacers fitted below the nut inside the crossmember holding the step in place. So when the step bent up it just pulled the retaining nuts through the bottom of the rear crossmember. If the step had been oiled recently it probably would have folded up thus averting the misshap.
Anyway hammer out, couple of whacks at the offending holes to flatten out the bent outwards edges.
I was able to put a decent size washer onto the bolt inside the crossmember on the passenger side. The bolt on the drivers side has to be accessed through a hole in the crossmember. This limits the size of the washer that can be used. I managed to find one to fit in but it is an awkward place to work.
Could not reuse one of the Land Rover bolts as I had to cut it to get it off the step. Could have been wrongly threaded at the factory but I found a suitable substitute.
Anyway with the assistance of the Mrs, everything is back in order.
So keep your rear step well oiled and it might fold up when you hit something. If it was bracketed to the underneath of the crossmember at the back instead of being braced against it, it would be a better job. It works well stepping on to it but if bent upwards for folding, the restraing nuts have to put all that force on to the thin bottom of the crossmember.
Has it been a plastic bumper with lots of plastic clips it would have been a more serious matter. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

We have had some specials made for a customer to go into a 2" receiver including a step.

Advantage being you can just take them out when not required.
