Chewy's 130 Restoration Thread!
Hi folks,
My names Shane and im from across the pond. I'm currently a 4th year mech eng student and ive picked up a 1997 300 TDI 130 to restore in my spare time!

Its done 197,000km on the clock and is in shabby condition. The previous owner had a house on the beach, hence the rust. Although he just had a new chassis fitted in 2008, so most of the rust is in the bulk head/door frames.

I've just sold the 300 TDI engine/gearbox/transfer out of it and i'm planning on installing a TD5 with auto trans. I've picked up a 2000 Disco TD5 as a wreck for a good price so i will begin with that.

My aims for the car:
- Fix the rust
- Get the TD5/Auto running smoothly
- Re-spray in Santorini Black
- Find a rear Tub and ditch the Steel tray
- Fit ARB Front/Rear lockers from the Disco TD5
- Some nice alloys with big tyres ( Possibly Twisted? in 17" on 0 Offset)
- Sound Proofing inside/out
- Retro fit some nice seats into it
- Some kind of sterreo, possibly a MUD console
- "A" frame Tubular bar with LED spot lights
- Roof rack/Cage with a row of spotties on the front.
- Trucklite Phase 7 LED driving lights
- Central Locking System

Anything else i come across in my travels! Very Happy
Its a fairly blank canvas, so the possibilities are endless!

Anyway, enough talking, here is Bender:

Welcome Shane! Good to have another international member! (We already have quite a few). Looks like a good project, plenty to do! It's already got some Bilstein shocks on it I see! Look forward to seeing it develop! 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Nice Thumbs Up

The tray back seems very popular down under, I guess it is more practical?

Think twice about black paint - its a pig to keep looking good, shows all the dust and dirt and white is prob the best colour for where you are. John

Thanks guys! I'll be stripping the front end of the 130 this weekend. The engine/gearbox has to be taken out.

Yes mate, that's the plan. Unless you know of an alternative? Smile

Ashcrofts do a conversion to the non electronic (as in, V8 spec) ZF 4 speed autoboxes to make them fit the Td5, although from what I head the compushift thing is the dogs danglies.
