Another lowered Defender....
As mentioned previously, I really wanted to lower my newly purchased TDi 300 so that it would fit into the garage. I had the garge door frame modified, allowing the up and over door to be raised by 5cm. This, coupled with a 2" lowering kit would, by my calculations, be enough to get the car into the garage.

I debated long and hard over whether lowering by 2" would upset the suspension geometry or have any other detrimental effects but took the plunge anyway. The Man for Land Rovers did the modifications and assured me all would be fine, and that the on road driving experience would be much improved. I went for the 2" lowering springs and also new Konis all round.

I have to say, not only does the profile of the car look much bettter lowered, IMHO, but it certainly drives much better, with greatly reduced roll etc. I'm not going to be using the car off road much, so the reduction in ground clearence is not an issue. So far, I love it!

And of course, she's now kept in the dry Razz

Sorry just going a little off topic for a minute. All this talk on lowering Defenders, this is just lowering the overall height of the body and yes whilst road handling will be undoubtably better the only way you'll compromise off road ability is by fitting smaller diameter wheels and tyres. It's the clearance between the ground and the axles that will often dictate whether you get stuck or not. With traction control or the age old method of left foot braking to find traction there is very little reason that a "lowered" Defender shouldn't go the same places as a standard Defender. Lifting motors is mainly done through the need to accomodate taller tyres which then put more space under the diffs.

Not strictly true as although you are correct about the difs being the same height you will make the ramp over angle lower and place fuel tank and filter etc closer to the ground. Approach and departure angles will also be compromised. John

Yes I agree, but for the people who are lowering their Defenders aren't looking at performing many extreme moves off road, they won't be wanting mud to fall off in the garage, it might compromise the floor height Whistle

Culminator - lowered mine by 2" since new for German car parks and no-one (including some dealers) even noticed. I get the impression quite a few old Defenders sink even lower just due to their age Whistle

I find the road handling to be fine (especially compared to an old Discovery I used to borrow, and "loaners" from the dealer). I've been over some pretty rough (but mostly dry) terrain with no complaints, though nothing as extreme as a lot of guys and gals on here do Shocked

Most importantly, I can drive my 110 to work every day and park it there Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...
