I put an original LR one on my 90. It was very straightforward. Took the headlining out and then rested the frame on the body and made sure it was all in the correct position. Marked up where the holes need to be drilled. Took the frame off and drilled all the holes in. Bolted up with some nice Allen socket head stainless bolts. Didn't even need two people as you can reach through an open window to do the roof mounts and you can reach through the wings if you take the spats off.

Thanks Alex, looks good.
So did you remove the wings or just the inner spats? |

Thanks again, the one I've seen is from Safety Devices, looks very similar and I'm sure it'd fit in the same way although I think the instructions say to remove the wings, sounds a bit extreme, your way of doing it must be easier.
Just a couple of final question, do you get any wind noise from it and would you fit another one? Do you like it? Cheers |

I can't see why you would need to remove the wings, in fact I am not even sure how that would work to fit it as you need the wings in situ to get it all in place. I am sure they all must fit in the same way - I think the Landrover ones are made by Safety Devices anyway.
I don't get any wind noise from my bar, seems fine, unlike some roof racks that can be a bit noisy. Although people say that these are purely a 'styling' bar I actually found fitting my bar added to the rigidity of the whole vehicle even though it is not a proper roll bar. I would definitely fit one again - actually just thinking about doing a build of another Defender from scratch and this is on the spec sheet. Although was thinking of doing a soft top in which case I will go for a 'proper' cage. An alternative supplier is Protection And Performance - they also make exactly the same thing and do it in either mild or stainless. Next time I will either get stainless (powder coat black over it) or galvanised and powder coated. |

Safety Devices say remove wing outer as they have a bracket which bolts to the bulkhead, that has captive nuts to make attaching bar easier. I have one fitted _ well designed and made.
The removal of wing outer seemed a major effort, but having seen what's involved it isn't and is by far the better option as you can then spray lots of black muck in this area, which is otherwise inaccessible. Especially once the bar is fitted ! Suggest having a mate help whist lining up before drilling. |

Yes got my bar from Ebay. It was a genuine Landrover part as fitted to G4 special editions I believe. Cost me £270 but that is much better than what Protection & Performance wanted.

Cheaper but it is just a few bits of pipe that need cutting and welding. Basically it is some expensive pipe rather than a cheap frame.....

My front bar was genuine 50th, but the internal was SD from a local ebay seller. Old stock.
