Hi guys,
Reality check, my 2008 Puma is actually not that clean... To give a little context to the whole thing, note that I : - have no difflock and hi/lo range indicator lamps working (the cable are cut/gone... not a big deal) - had to flood the diff lock selector with WD40 to bring it back to life - have no much trouble engaging the high range, but the low range needs a little clutch to engage properly. - probably have a dead low range gear, as once engaged, it drives but brings a horrible crunchy noise in the gears... You'll probably tell me to stop there and have the transfer box serviced/replaced. But here's the thing : in high range, when coming back from 6th to 3rd (obviously through 5th and 4th...), from 110+ kph to 60, with no rush, nice and quiet on the clutch, the transfer case gently slips back to neutral. I have to stop, re-engage. The more intriguing is that if I don't reach 110 kph in 6th, the problem never occurs. When I hold the lever while decelerating (I have three hands), I feel quite a huge momentum applied on the lever. I can hold it to avoid it from slipping, but that's not really a sustainable solution... Before playing with the rod adjustment, opening the tunnel and all, I went under the truck, and surprise surprise, look at the gearbox : Click image to enlarge There's a support for the gearbox to the chassis that is clearly missing ! Whether there should be a silent bloc or not, I have no idea, as the link between the support and the chassis is nowhere to be seen on the workshop drawings... But after driving it a few days, I had another look at it, and it clearly moved (down) : I'd like to think that it could be a reason for my troubles, can anyone take a picture or let me know how this MT82 gearbox is tightened to the chassis ? I have the naive feeling that the momentum of the gearbox, not secured to the chassis, throws it frontwards when hitting the brakes. Thus, the rod pushes the selector backwards, it turns to neutral, and once engaged, the rod follows and brings the lever to neutral. Apart from that, I know I should have it serviced asap (especially since I found out that the previous owner had the diff lock constantly engaged and drove at 120 with no fear...), the low range thingy being already a concern. But LR here are seriously expensive, and if I can fix that part myself, that would save me a huge lot of money ! Any idea/picture is most welcome ! Chris |

there is no mounting missing they are all like that,
regards jumping out of high range and low range being noisy it does sound like the transfer box has been damaged, they are not that expensive and relatively easy to change, (an average home mechanic should be able to do it successfully) a search on here will find several threads about it, but im sure someone will be along soon with better answers than mine. Good Luck ps take a look as Ashcroft transmissions web site for prices from a very reputable supplier (appriciate you are not in the UK) DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Sounds a bit hard to believe... So what is the purpose of this support ? And of the aligned holes ? And why is the gearbox moving up and down ? For the transfer case, Ashcroft does not propose it for the MT82, any precision to include in my request for quotation ? I guess they know pretty well their business, but it's worth giving them all the info... On the other hand, is it worth asking LR to drain my transfer case to check for bits ? Or am I wasting my money and should ask for replacement straight away (not especially by them by the way) ? Chris |

puma has same basis transfer case as other gearboxs so price should be simular
following text is from Ashcrofts web site Product Information There are many different types of LT 230 transfer cases used across the landrover range, all are available to order and we aim to dispatch any order within two working days. Prices assume a serviceable exchange unit (if the exchange unit is deemed unserviceable a surcharge will apply). The core cost is the cost to be added to the exchange cost if the transmission is purchased on an outright sale. Prices : •1.003 ratios £ 545 •1.211/1.222/1.410 ratios £ 495 •1.667 ratios £ 545 We are able to supply alternative ratios with no increase in cost. A popular ratio change for the Defender is to change from the stock 1.4 to 1.2 which will raise the gearing in a Td5 90/110 or a Defender Tdi by 15%. For more info on this conversion see here Core charge - £150. This sum is refundable on receipt of a "like for like" serviceable exchange unit, which must be complete and not stripped. Surcharges will apply if the exchange unit is the incorrect type, stripped or not complete. Fitting Service. We are able to offer a same day fitting service for the LT230. Price is all-inclusive and includes, remanufactured unit, oil, removal and refit, Vat and free use of a courtesy car. 1.4 ratios £864 1.2 ratios £864 1.003 & 1.667 £924 DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Just received the quotation for the 60 months service...
Around 800 quids, and the worth is that I don't have much to complain about its content.. it's just that their rates are I asked for a transfer case replacement, but I know what kind of prices to expect... Do you know what'd be the weight of a transfer case from Ashcroft ? I'm really thinking of shipping one... Chris |

So it seems I pushed it a little too far... Yesterday went for some dune bashing, and the high gear started to slip to neutral as soon as I was slowing down.
It made the whole trip quite sweaty for me, hopefully my passengers were more focused on the landscape than me holding the rod Anyway "Machito" goes to LR in a couple of days, I'm already afraid of the coming bill. I'm a bit concerned on them complaining about my not-so-compliant headlight wiring... Chris |

Got an estimate from LR : 3k It includes the B inspection but still...
What concerns me the most, is that they decided it was the clutch and flywheel to be replaced.... I'm no mechanic, but I really have a hard time believing it's the clutch. But maybe they found no bits in the transfer oil... I asked them anyway... What do you think ? Chris |

Well eventually after asking them why on earth they would have to replace the clutch, they told me the whole transfer box too. Oh, really ?
Alright, then, how much ? 4000 euros... Exluding labour. I'm now waiting for Ashcroft to give me their estimate for shipping.... 57 kg But of course LR doesn't want to fit someone else's box... so I'll have to have it towed away Chris |

Guys, a simple question... a stupid one, really :
Is is dangerous to drive around a mile with an empty transfer box ? The reason I ask is that LR drained mine to face the fact that the gears have all been crushed inside. But now they refuse to fit the Ashcroft transfer case I ordered, so I'll have to take it to another workshop. So I don't really care if it damages the current transfer box a little further. But I don't want anything else to be ruined ! I wouldn't mind paying LR to fill it again, the oil is not that expensive, but they just realised they don't have it and it would take 3 weeks to come... Well in the process of replacing the transfer box, but it seems the mount is dead...
Any idea what part number it is ? Click image to enlarge The rubber is all eaten, right ? Would it be the only piece to replace ? Chris |
