Hi,
it looks like the water sensor, which the TD5 have attached to the fuel filter, is not present on the Puma. AFAIK that sensor often spelled trouble, or gave false alarms ? Or is the fuel too good here? Or is the Puma not supposed to be used where water in fuel is a problem ? Could water, trapped in the fuel filter between the filter-service-intervals be a problem in winter when it freezes ? I came across that thread: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defen...rap-2.html They have attached a plastic bowl to under the standard Puma-Fuel filter which makes inspection easy. OTOH you ´have´ to inspect it then to give it some use. A nice addition would be the TD5 sensor (in case one would get the correct harness-plug and the wiring right) - so you get a warning light and then have the chance to look at the bowl to be sure. But there probably isn´t enough space to fit the bowl and the sensor. (pics below) Anyway, I still wonder what´s the reason behind omitting any means of making the driver aware there´s some water. does that water collection bowl fit directly to the standard Defender Fuel filter?

45 pounds gets you two of those water catchers including postage to SA. I'm thinking about it.......might wait till the end of the year - thats when my waranty expires

According to the poster on the AULRO forum - who is actually our own Defender2 superhero Lorryman100 - the sedimentor bowl WILL fit directly onto a standard Puma filter.

It does fit on the Land Rover filter- but I am sure it will be in the other thread that you need to relocate the filter to prevent the radius arm hitting it.
You can either manufacture one yourself or as I did pay £30 for a Gwyn Lewis one which does the job. You also need to adjust the shape of the bottom of the fuel filter guard. Here is mine after 200 litres of fuel (3 fills). Click image to enlarge You just can beat Cyprus fuel stations!!!...... But then again I can't complain at £1.10 a litre. It doesn't seem to be a separate item on his website- he tends to sell them as part of the 'Challenge' suspension kit. Park on a slope (I just put the front wheels on the sommers lift) and then loosen off the tap and it just flows out (Have emptied twice since fitting).
I am sure I could have positioned it so that the tap was at the bottom of the bowl rather the top, but it was my first attempt and have been a bit busy since to get around to re-adjusting. Glyn |

The picture from the austr. Forum (browse through the link in the first posting here) shows a original Fuel Filter, with printed-on LR-logo. To this the bowl is attached. proof enough for me to try |

It moves the filter forward, up and out (the spacer washers move it away from the chassis). I have modified the picture of the Gwyn Lewis: I guess if you can make a plate at home that is the ideal answer- I got this one for the simple fact it is as cheap as the materials would cost and it is galvanised and a guaranteed easy install. errr ... but then the GwynLewis-Plate moves it forward but only a couple of mm´s up.
Doesn´t that still spell trouble when the radius(trailing) arm is raised upwards at axle-twisters ? Seems resp. the homepage says like his plate is designed to move the filter away from the shock mounting. But not upwards as he probably hasn´t had got in mind to gain space for a filter bowl. Anyway´s the plate from TimNZ is easy to reproduce if I could find a sheet of scale/plotting paper with millimeter-scale on it to mark where a centre punch will have to hit the steel. |
