Missing Engine Strap
I put my defender into the dealers for a number of issues last week including a broken metal strap on the top of the engine. The strap was on the top left of the engine and streched from the front to the back near the heat shield for the alternator - sorry for the poor description as I am not very technically minded. When I looked under the bonnet today there was no strap! Can anyone tell me what this strap does and do I need to have it replaced?

No picture, but from memory it was about 12" long 1" wide and had holes along its length. Mechanic said he had never seen one broken before

Hi Grockle,

Don't think it was an earth strap as it was solid. When I first reported it the dealer was unsure what to call it. We looked under the bonnet of a brand new Puma to confirm it was not just an after market add on.

Car going into dealers to repair oil leak at cylinder head next Tuesday. At same time they will replace strap if they can find out what its for. As i said earlier I looked under the bonnet of a 90 and it had one, however when I looked under the bonnet a new 110 today there was no sign of it - strange! Dealer suggested it might be a "army" add on????

I will keep you informed of developments. Defender Virgin

Mystery solved, it was a heat shield strap. Now replaced.
